So, I've been watching Jimmy's videos for a while now...I was watching this one :  http://makezine.com/video/diresta-pirate-chest/with my 5 year old daughter, and she was really into it...so I asked her if she wanted me to make her one, and of course she did..what 5 year old doesn't want a treasure chest!? so here's mine. Note every part of it is hand made, down to the hinges and latch.  Many thanks to Jimmy DiResta for the inspiration and the smile it put on my little girl's face.  Also, I've had a few people ask me to make them one and I'll be selling a few now..which is great, because I'm kind of between jobs...  cheers, everyone.Millermatic 211 Miller Blue Fire 140@swiftwelding on Instagram
Reply:That is so cool. Might just have to make one myself.
Reply:I don't know which is better; the story behind the chest or the way you built it. Both are just great. Isn't it great having daughters, especially when they're that age?! Just great work at construction and being a Dad.
Reply:Very nice, I like the fact you re-used timber to give it that authentic patina. Good work.
Reply:Very nicely done!  A treasure chest is on my 'list of things to build.'  The only thing that would make yours better is handles on the ends.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Thanks, guys!  The wood is all from a single pallet , cut out, de-nailed, and then cut to length and stripped down to smaller strips for the top.  I didn't add handles to this one, but I will to the others.  DiResta is awesome , I highly recommend watching his stuff if you are looking for some inspiration.Millermatic 211 Miller Blue Fire 140@swiftwelding on Instagram

Reply:look up on McMastercarr and see their gas struts and hardware. That top looks heavy and like a finger crusher if it falls. a single or dual gas strut on either side of the top would not let it come crushing down and it would help lift it when opening. Ive got two toddlers. cant help it.http://www.mcmaster.com/#lid-supportsAwesome stuff. you did a very cool job. I dig it!!Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 04-02-2014 at 10:12 AM.

Reply:Wow! Very cool treasure chest! Like the use of pallets, they look great with the metal you used, quite authentic. I'm sure your daughter loves it. Great job!
Reply:Sorry it took me a couple of days. been out of town on a job.  Most of it's 1/8" , but the strips holding the top in are a little thinner.  It's all scrap from the pile at work, though.  Not a bad idea putting some gas shocks or something on it.  Might do that.  She seemed really excited about it, but it's still sitting there where I put it. Heh. I know it's something she'll have forever, at least. I started working on two more yesterday when we got back.  Trying to get them done before a art/craft fair I'm doing on the 19th.  Anthony -- I'd definitely be willing to do that if you really want , but I'd say you should be able to do it all yourself. simple project, if you've got the space and the tools to do it...I don't have a plasma, I just used an acetylene torch (and a few flap discs).... Let me know!Millermatic 211 Miller Blue Fire 140@swiftwelding on Instagram
Reply:Here's a photo of the second one, finally finished it a few weeks ago. This time I made handles with some old chain, and used firring strips from home depot for most of the wood. makes it a lot easier to get that rounded top done, without having to rip down boards to size.  I just got a new job a few weeks back, also..so the chests I make from here on out will be cut with the plasma cutter there...hooray! no more rough oxy fuel cuts.Millermatic 211 Miller Blue Fire 140@swiftwelding on Instagram
