This afternoon I decided to give one of my machines a quick going over as I plan to use it a lot next weekend. Giving a cursory look over the unit and glancing into the cooling air discharge duct, I see a very large rodent nest which is quite fresh. A quick press of the starter button and a mouse scampers out the bottom flywheel turner hole..... I cannot remove this nest without getting to the exciter section so off with the belly band for access. It seems to me it would take a single mouse quite some time to build a nest the size of this one and he did. I used the machine less than a month ago and it was clean then. Oh well. After cleaning this up and lubricating the brush holder assembly's, I removed the clamshell cover on the back to get a look at the other end. It too had a very large nest built up inside with a lot of plastic "Wal-Mart" bags and pieces as part of the bedding. Industrious little bastard is what I'm thinking. Anyway I took the other two welders apart and the other large machine also had an active infestation in it. Nothing seems to be compromised but the nests were cleaned out all the same. I then went over to a "Menard's" store and picked up a couple boxes of naphthalene moth balls, and a few small plastic containers to hold the balls. I'll punch holes in the lids of these things and zip tie the containers inside the commutator sections of the machines. Mice really don't favor that smell so hopefully this will preclude the affair again.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:Moths are not rats. But please report back if you have luck.

Reply:Got him in a trap. Sucker for peanut butter. I'll probably catch his cohorts later in the night too. I set traps around both welders which had nests so this ought to be entertaining.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I had a mouse infestation in the shop a few years ago. I caught 13 mice in 3 days with 6 traps. None of them got into machines but one of them did it's business on my bandsaw and it was war after that. I used peanut butter for bait.
Reply:I go into my battles with them periodically. I hate them for the damage they do. They urinate as they go, encouraging mold and rust growth. I can trap a few a day from august till I get lazy in winter. There seems to be an inexhaustible army of them. My wife has had some success with dryer sheets. They seem to keep them away, at least they don't make their nests from them.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:Naphthalene is nasty stuff. That mothball smell is a warning sign that brain damage is happening. That's why the directions always say to use them only in enclosed containers. I knew somebody who started complaining about headaches...went to his house and you could smell mothballs when you walked in. He sprinkled 'em around because somebody told him it'd help with a mouse and cockroach problem. I said he should get rid of the mothballs and clean up his house so the mice and cockroaches don't have constant, readily available food sources. A day or two after he got rid of the mothballs and aired out the place, the headaches stopped. But he's a pig and can't keep a clean house, so he's still fighting the mice and cockroaches. 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 RefitMiller TB280 w/Spoolmatic 30a2016 AHP AlphaTIG 200XAncient Millermatic 35Zeny Cut50 plasma cutter
Reply:I have 3 really big self cleaning, self rearming, proximity activated mouse traps, (cats) lazy buggers sleep all day but must work all night. I hardly ever see a mouse anymore. I do find chunks now and then... Disgusting.
Reply:cats are great, my dad HATES cats, but always makes sure any wild ones hang around his place. they do well for him, as long as they dont populate.the family cat at my place is spoiled rotten, and only cares to chase dogs and birds. idiot was almost friendly with the rat we had living in the dumpster. . . . . so i guess cats shouldn't be fed "too-well"bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:Industrial strength Coumadin the solved mouse problem in my barn/shop several years ago. Just have to restock the bait stations every year to keep them from getting cozy inside the building.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:dryer sheets are an excellent repellent for them, we use them at the hunting shacks and the mouse problem in the beds has stopped completely. Best traps we used were 5gal bucket with a can set up over the top so it can spin. Just smear peanut butter on the can and give them a little ramp so they can jump to it, they fall into the water in the bucket and drown (RV antifreeze is recommended)
Reply:Rat Bait very 3 months or so, to keep them from coming in from the fields around my house. Lately I have been seeing a stray cat around, as long as she stays out of my buildings!
