Stick and Alum

Just to see how it would work and look I p/u some Hobart 1/8 4043 rods (10 pack... The stick  Gods and I have not met yet ) And went to town on some 1/8 alum. that I have, I set the Red AC/DC to 70 amps, for no burn thru, and the beads looked good. Now what is the best way to remove the slag ?? so the weld will look some what nice...I will try and get some close up pict. later

Reply:Lets see the beads. The amps you are suggesting sound way low for 1/8" alum rods, and most guys I know have a real tough time getting decent welds with them.Stick alum welds super fast and even guys who can weld with stick well have trouble keeping the arc length short enough as fast as they burn..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I went back up and did a lap joint and turned the heat to 85 amps, I think I am moving to slow and the alum is to thin. The amps jump 75,85,ect and I have the camera on charge. I will have some pict up on Fri. and yes the slag is a pain to remove.It nice to just try this with a 10 rod pack..I am not sure if I can find a 4043 in 3/32 or if they make them in that size.
Reply:I have some 3/32" rods in alum. I forget exactly what amps we were plying with them at, but I'd start with those in the 85-95 amp range and go up. 1/8" I'd be even higher.Welding 1/8" alum using 3/32" rods was a big challenge. You had to drop your arm really fast. Maybe 1-2 seconds to burn a whole rod, 3 tops. Slag removal was fair at best even with getting everything as close to perfect as possible..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:It was just something I was trying.I won't be makeing any $$$ on alum.... I have a MM252 and a MM211, if I ever would try to do some work with alum. I would just p/u a spoolgun. As of now I am happy fixing mower decks here in sandy Fl.
