Hey Guys,I've read about the cold saws and their performance and higher quality in compareison to band saws or chop saws. I've priced radial saws and the $100.00 + blades required to cut ferrous metals. They clam to cut angle, sq tube, etc....No clean up. What I do know is the fact when one carbide tooth is dropped due to miss alignment or heat dull due to too much speed. the expensive blade is shot. Any one using this set up and cqn give real world advice?Miller TrailBlazer 251Miller HF-250-1Miller MaxStar 150 STLHyperTherm PowerMax 380 plasmaLincoln PowerMig 180Millermatic 252Miller Diversion 180
Reply:quality blades can be repaired and resharpened,   my Evolution blade costs $40 +3 per broken tooth..    a quality cold saw is going to cost more than $100  unless you are talking about the HarborFreight 7" type metal saw for about $80.   the quality is in the blade.   the 7 inch evolution is about $35 and the 14 inch is about $100.  I have several broken teeth on my evo saw right now and it still cuts fine.  a bit slower and a few sparks but works ok.  I have a new blade waiting to install but save that for if I need perfect miter cuts etc.   there are also different blades for stainless and aluminum.   Plan to try the $40 freud metal blade as have read good things about it at $40Yes they are definitely worth the money.  once u use a good cold chop saw you will never want to use an abrasive cut saw again...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Just my 1 cents worth I have a 8" Milwaukee heavy duty saw and it is a beast it will cut just about anything my problem is after all these years working with mine is with me myself i just cant handle it. Age late 50's and severe carpel tunnel I just cant hold it but the guys that I train in welding has no problem with it they use as it was their best friend, as for replacement blades I have not had that problem mine is approx three years old and works as it came out of the box so my conclusion is Yes!! it is well worth the price I have no experience with any other than Milwaukee , so I suggest get the best one you can afford. Good luck wbolden [email protected]
Reply:I JUST got the rage 2 about a week ago.  I haven't used it too much but I LOVE it.  It's 100% better than using 4 1/2 grinders w/ cutoff wheels for everything like I was before.  Can't speak to the blade life but if you dont lean on the blade and you follow their cutting directions it's supposed to last a long time.  It's also way easier to clean up the chips from these than the dust from abrasive cutting.  Very fast cutting, the burrs are really small (not big enough to even warrant cleaning up) and the cuts are precise enough for welding.  It's also not any louder than cutting with a 4 1/2 grinder, but it's 3x as fast.  The only down side I see to this one is that it doesn't have the D handle.  that seems like an important feature if you're using it a lot - I just use mine for a hobby so the extra money wasn't worth it.  If you search around there is a lot of reviews and information on any type of saw you can think of on here.Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
Reply:OK, I give up. Can the sight programer make a window pop up every time the word "saw" is used?!?!The window will be a 2 page form you have to fill out, multiple choice, to clarify/inform the author as to what "saw" he/she is talking about and the differences between the various "saws that cut in a downward, pivoting motion".DISCLAIMER: Not directing this to the OP in particular, and am intending my comment to be taken with humour and just a pinch of salt.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I actually DO find it frustrating and humorous and when people do not understand the differences between the various saws.A true cold saw is one that uses flood coolant and the rpm range is MUCH lower. Typically a gear driven blade. They are NOT chop saw style that run the mega high rpm. Most will start in the $2,000 range and go up. Anything else new is either cheap import junk or not a cold saw.I have a Startrite Coldsaw and it is a great tool. If I had a limited budget, you need the following: Chop saw, cut blades for 4 1/2" grinder. When money permits, get a GOOD horizontal bandsaw with flood coolant like a doall, wells, etc. If you have plenty of extra coin, only then is the cold saw worth the purchase. It will give you a mill like finish and they are nice. Make sure you can justify the cost.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
