Hey guys.. My folks are breaking out their rigs and ready to do service/PM on their boat trailers.. Swapping out grease with a manual pump on tri-axles and such in the summer heat is gettin a little brutal. Air isn't usually very convenient to where I seem to end up working so I wanted to check into the cordless offerings. It'll prolly only get used a dozen or so times a year. But if it works, it'd sure be a welcome relief from the current program.. Thanks for any helpful info..    d:^)  Schneeks..ESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
Reply:We have the Lincoln 12 volt kit. Seems to work fine for greasing our cranes and other random equipment. But I do like the design of Milwaukee's cordless grease gun. It has an integrated stand, so when you put it down, dirt and crap doesn't immediately stick to wherever you have been holding it with your greasy hands.Whatever you buy, get a box of rubber gloves to go with it.mens agitat molem
Reply:I also have the Lincoln 12V - no complaints about it, and used it daily for a couple years on rock crushers/conveyors/etc.
Reply:I'm a firm believer that if you're not going to use it often, don't buy battery powered. The batteries go bad are are usually pretty expensive. I might still have an air operated cartridge one. If I do, you're welcome to it for the actual shipping cost. (sorry, but things are still pretty tight) I got a couple when I bought some trucks and I never used them because I have the drum type air operated. Let me know if interested and I can look for them."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Buy an air powered, I use mine pretty often to pump up the tracks on my linkbelt. The battery ones die over time, worse if you dont use them. You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:Let us think out side the box......Why not get an pneumatic operated gun and power it off of a 10lb CO2 cylinder with a 75 psi fixed regulator?   CO2 is dirt cheep from your LWS.
Reply:Ive had several 12 volt ones. THey work good but the batteries were not durable lasted about a year. REASE AND TEMP COULD GET ABOUT Depending on grease and temp could get about 2 tubes out of a charge. I went t a air one that has lasted 3 years so far. For your use a 12 vol would probably be ok. Just deep cycle the batteries evry once and a while. Would be nice to have one that used same batteries as a drill so they would stay fresh.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:as with most battery operated tools they are a NOVELTY i have a lincoln and it will live in my buddies tool box the rest of its life. they are way bulky, way lame in the case they come in esp when they sit in the sun half the day. if you really need to move lots-o-grease Air or nothing ! plus I HATE HOSES on a grease gun! a ridgid tube crooked neck with a swivel and a lever for me! and i go through a case a week
Reply:not to hijack or change the subject but if you decide on a battery 1 I have 2 and they come in handy and will sell one for cheap.Ron
Reply:I've run my pneumatic grease gun off an air pig before.  CO2 might be better for several axles though.  I only had to walk a couple hundred feet to refill my air pig.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Lots of CO2 portable units around, look around some of the off-road suppliers. Rock crawlers and trail riders love them because they hold a lot more gas than a similar sized air tank and they can pull them off the rig to help others which is difficult with most decent sized compressors. I never want to have to fill a 40+ inch tire with one of those roadside emergency 12v compressors. They take forever to fill up a normal tire and forget about trying to reseat a bead. Not the cheapest I just did a quick search and they seem to be between 350-400 but they can be used to power anything that normal compressed air would run. PowerTank makes a setup, uses a 10lb cylinder and has an adjustable regulator.

Reply:I have been using the pistol grip guns for years,  only need one hand needed, no battery, and work great in confined spaces.  Lincoln gun costs about 30.00. best, Ralph
Reply:We used to have several 12v lincoln guns at work. They have all been replaced with 14v or 18v guns now. The battery life of the 18v units is incredible compared to the 12v units.I dont care for the rigid pipe on a grease gun. It makes it too hard to get into confined areas. A flexable hose works best for these areas.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:http://reviews.northerntool.com/0394...ws/reviews.htmI like how much these put out with a pump.  Much cheaper to buy grease buy the pail as well.
Reply:Pistol grip lincoln heavy duty is the way to go. Tried other brands dont hold up. Have seen some dual speed guns with a hi volume and a hi pressure function but havnt tried one yet. Being tethered to a hose  does suck but if you have to push 3 or 4 tubes in a row its worth it. Plus its not bouncing around in a tractor or pickup it always in the shop where it should be.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:Checking on CO2 my LWS sez it's more corrosive than air but otherwise compatible.. About $100 for a 5# bottle full and ~$12 for refills..Anyone used the CO2 and seen much difference.? Any special maintenance.?  Comments.? Thanx..    d:^)  Schneeks..ESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

Reply:Originally Posted by rlitmanYes.  If left under pressure, the oil gets squeezed out of the grease, leaving you with a peanut butter thick mess that won't flow into the pump.I get the best results by pushing the rod in when I need grease, and pulling it out when I'm done for the day.Oh, and they make special heated jackets for grease guns if you want it to flow in the winter. If I leave my grease gun in my unheated shop over the winter, I can forget about being able to use it when its too cold.
Reply:Originally Posted by snoeproeIf you want grease that will work and flow in cold weather, use synthetic grease and forget about the warming jacket.Hey Rlitman.. Thanx for all that info.!! So am I right in thinking that anything that can be run with air can be run with CO2 for practical purposes.?  Pretty much as long as it's not an "air hog" type of tool that would make that concept impractical.? Right now it'd be a single use setup, with infrequency of use being the main reason to shy away from battery operated units from what I've gathered here. ..I looked at the Lowe's air grease gun and it looked suspiciously like the Harbor Freight model and both are made in China. Not sure if that's good, bad, or indifferent. I tend to shy away from HF tools with moving parts I may need to depend on. Thanx..    d:^)  Schneeks..Edit:Looking at 2 models in the Grainger catalog. The Lincoln 2FRU5(1162) and Westward 3APF9. Both say they're "automatic", but the Westward states it has a "continuous grease discharge". Does this mean you can just hold the trigger and it'll steadily pump grease till ya let up.? Looks like 2 different handle styles as well. Any advantage either way.?   Thanx, again..  d:^)Last edited by Schneeky; 05-26-2011 at 07:52 AM.Reason: New infoESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
Reply:Guys, tha main reason your grease guns will not pump, esp with a fresh tube is because you have air entrapment in it. Air lock will prevent your grease gun from pumping grease. Get rid of the air, and away it goes. Synthetic grease pumps well in cold conditions with no issues.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Continuous guns typically push a steady stream. I have a lincoln professional from Napa cost about 70 bucks this one pumps you can actually hear the cachunks.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:My compressor shuts off between 175 & 180 psi. So, @ 150psi, I am sure I can acomplish what I need, since most air tools are rated @ 90 psi. I want this for traveling. The first time I had to change a flat on the wifes Yukon, I bent the lug wrench GM gave with it. The factory had those nuts on sooo tight. So now I want to carry an impact on a road trip, in case I can't plug it. And also to regulate the psi for filling after plugging it. If you're going to have a bad situation, I like to make the outcome as easy as possible."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I am using a 75psi fixed regulator... Nothing fancy and it's cheep.  Western RP320075  They have other pressure ratings, but I have found the 75 psi handy for inflating tires and operating the grease gun. ( it's a Jeep thing).   You can find 5 & 10 lb cylinders cheep from anyone tossing out a beer-mister.  You might even score a good deal on the cylinder from your LWS or gas supplier.  https://weldingsupply.securesites.co...EF:OR:RP320075
