Reply:I live in north Texas.  We have seven different kinds of expansive soils, also known as black gumbo clay.  When it is just wrong it is the most miserable stuff in the world to work with, ever.  It sticks to everything.About three weeks ago we noticed a wet spot out by the water meter.  I called the city and the nicest young convinced me it was my problem because it was between the meter and the house.  The clay was just wrong.  The trench was about 35' long and 30" deep.  I'll be 66 in a couple of months and didn't want to have to do this at that age.  About half way through day one I packed it up and went to the shop.  I made something similar to this.  The next morning my wife came out and wanted to know what the noise was.  She watched me smack that anvil thing and the clay was gone from the shovel.  She was impressed.  She's hard to impress, been with me way too long.So I'm set up with a country boy assembly line, one man show, I can build 25 a day by myself.  And yes, you can get it hot dipped galvanized for less than the labor and material cost of painting.  Plus with the galvanized finish you don't have to worry about chipping and scratching like you do with paint, packing is just stacking.I have three patents already.  So this time I went with a provisional application because it is so simple and it gives me 12 months, not a minute more, to send in the utility patent application.  And, most important of all, the idea is protected.  I did that a little over a week ago and now have these out with foundation repair, fencing, landscaping, irrigation, and drainage repair crews for evaluation.I couldn't have done all this in such a short period of time without being a weldor.  BTW, that arc that is the anvil surface, it's done in a forge.  That piece will never ever be straight again, ever.  Those legs? notice that they are bent catawampus so that they dig in when smacked with a shovel or post hole diggers.wish me luck Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:Keep in mind this is good old fashioned twofer.  I was blessed with the opportunity to design a jig and tools for taking the spine out of the forge while orange and forming it to shape.  The legs are made with another tool made just for doing this project.Twofer, when you get to make the tools to make what you want in the first place.life is good

Reply:There's a patented shovel and spade made and sold here in the US that is full of holes for clay soils.  They're expensive, $75.00, and I will probably end up with one just to try it.  Supposedly the porous surface won't hold the clay. What amazes me is I can't find anything my idea anywhere, so simple and yet no one has marketed it before.  Most of the internet advice is along the teflon idea like yours.  Spray on WD or Pam every couple of shovel fulls.  Some of the bosses I have left D Mudders with have told me their guys are doing fine with putty knives to scrape it off with and or wood blocks to smack it off with.  I just want to get it into the hands of the workers.  It will make their jobs easier and they will feel better at the end of the day, and, big and, more work will get done.life is good
Reply:anvil thing? what anvil thing.I hope you've done a better job describing what your invention is on the patent application, because I have no idea what I'm looking at or how it's supposed to work or anything.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:Those of you that didn't know what this was and how useful it is really annoy those of us that have ever had to dig in gumbo clay soil. This stuff is so evil that you can't remove it from a shovel with your hands. I've had to carry a spare shovel with me to use to clean the one I was digging with. Kinda want to punch harv in the pills for not inventing this 20 or 30 years ago when I was much more likely to actually use a shovel. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Reply:After reading this several times over I realized how it worked. The I wondered.... Hmmm. I have seen this somewhere before. It hit me. There is a patent on it. Called mother nature. Here is the tool she has.A rock, also called a boulder, stone, or gravel.Haha! Just kidding!
Reply:We don't have many of those in this part of Texas. HAHASent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I497 using TapatalkGravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I'm going to try to do some videos tomorrow if my wife can come by and operate the Ipad.  I hope that will help. The rock thing is really pretty well on.  But D Mudder has a couple of advantages, it weighs just a tad over 10 lbs, the arch that allows the digging tool to attack from multiple angles is also a convenient handle for relocating.  Another advantage over the rock can be appreciated by anyone who has smacked a hard surface like concrete to remove the clay and had most of clay remain attached where the shovel and concrete met.  D Mudder has no flat surface to stop the clay from flying away, like I said, "inertia is your friend."Here are the most common remedies currently being used by those maintaining a continuing intimacy with the gumbo clays.1. Five gallon bucket of water for dipping the digging tool.  It's not just inefficient, it's very very messy inefficient.2.  Putty knife.  Imagine keeping a putty knife in your back pocket and having to remove it to clean the clay off of a shovel every three or four attempts to empty shovel.  You will now not only have the clay all over the handle of the shovel, your hands, but your pocket will be full of the clay too.  This means anywhere you sit you will be appreciated.  And let's not forget how much fun this is going to be when you want to remove the clay from the pocket.3.  Another shovel for removing the clay from the first shovel.  This is probably the most common remedy.  It is also very wearing because the clay coming off of shovel one is now stuck on shovel two.  Using shovel one to take it off of shovel two means you are just about where you were when you started.4. Using a hard surface for slamming the shovel against to remove the clay.  As a business owner this one can scare you plenty.  Let's say a labor in frustration starts using the concrete sidewalk.  And that side walk has a special finish.  And your laborer is chipping the surface.  It might cost you more to fix that sidewalk than it cost the client for your services. It's a special thing.life is good

Reply:a teflon shovel trumps it.face all times with a positive mental attitude, then and only then will you have done your best.
Reply:The only teflon coated shovels I can find online are snow shovels.  Those wouldn't work for digging in this material. As far as using any other object such as a cinder block or wheelbarrow, you should try digging in this stuff and you would realize that those would work for a short time then become nearly useless.  Also, when you are standing in a trench you need something that you can move along with you as you dig.  This device is the best thing I've seen to solve this problem.  If harv wasn't so far north of me we could get together and make a video of it being used.
