First of all, forgive me if this has been posted before, but as a newbie this stuff is all new and still real interesting.  I ran across this article http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/...rocedures.html on welding tips and tricks explaining the dangers of using mig for critical welds. What caught my attention was the pic I'm posting below.Looking at this pic, it's easy to see why I hear all you guys talk about the dangers of a "pretty" weld. Without cutting this weld, you would think that it's a pretty good weld, when in fact it barely joins any metal at all.Stuff like this really makes a newbie like me sit up and take notice.Learning to weld, one arc at a time.
Reply:Great that you realize this.   With practice you will learn to recognize if you are making a sound weld or not.   There is several threads here on etching and how you can check your own welds.   Just watched parts of a video Jody made welding aluminum with helium mix.  It was very obvious to me that while it looked pretty it was lacking fusion in the root. This video.     guarantee that etching would show little to no root penetration.   Yet super looking welds.Last edited by soutthpaw; 09-01-2015 at 09:14 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Mig can/is used for critical applications providing that someone has done their homework. I'm not certified to do NDT but do destructive testing all the time. You would be surprised how many short circuit mig welds break when doing bend tests, fillet break tests, or macro etch testing. I just got done failing 4 - 3F welds, 4 out of 11 on a factory floor so not too bad, that passed the visual with flying colors but had no penetration in the root. People get angry and upset when they make good looking welds and they fail so I always take their stamped failed specimens when I go to do their retest. You would be surprised how many welds don't meet code requirements. That being said, welds are pretty strong. Even bad welds are difficult to break at times. It all depends on what you are welding. It's kind of a continuum starting with a flower pot holder and ending with a weld made for a nuclear reactor.
