I'm looking at a new place to live and I might end op in a townhome.  Has anybody built a room for their compressor?  How much sound proofing did you use and about how many decibels did it quiet it down?  Also, how large is your compressor?  I'm also worried about airflow for the fan on the compressor motor.  How much room do you think my compressor needs to breathe efficiently?  Can anybody help?I have Model C416VA4 from castair.http://www.castair.net/commercial-air-compressors.html
Reply:I have two compressors, an 80 gallon like yours that is crazy loud, and an old slower turning 120 gallon horizontal which is quieter (but still loud). I moved them into the basement. I'm lucky the shop has a partial basement   Several shops I've worked have had the compressors outside. Likely not an option in a townhouse. Here's a couple ideas that might help:http://www.cianperez.com/Photo/Expos..._Enclosure.htmhttp://picture-framers-blog.blogspot...re-for-my.html
Reply:A shop I worked at recently had a rotary air compressor, which was about as noisy as an antique refrigerator.  (maybe on the noisier side of a refrigerator.)  Very quiet for an air compressor.  Could have a conversation right next to it.Unfortunately, I think rotary compressors are not cheap.  This one had a built in dryer too.
Reply:I enclosed a 60 Gallon outside of my shop to keep the noise down and insulated it with household insulation and blue board Cut the noise in about 1/2 but still too loud.  A slower turning compressor tends to make less noise so look around carefully before you purchase if you dont have it already.  The main noise is from the intake of the air and the mechanical sounds of the compressor pump, both of which are nearly impossible to insulate or effectively enclose.  Doing this also increased the need to drain more frequently.  Dont know why or if it is a fluke, but I drain twice as often now.HTHBobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:this would be a guess but you could probably mount a muffler on it to help quieten it down.. you could also use some sound absorbing material on the walls, they make it in a paintable or sprayable type.Last edited by brucer; 06-15-2011 at 04:32 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:A muffler on the intake can make a difference.
Reply:You can put it in a small room and insulate it depending on how much you use it heat could be a issue. If possible relocate your air intake to the out side that will reduce interior noise. If I remember right the c-aire comps turn pretty slow compared to others.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:just piping the intake thru the outside wall will help a lot.
Reply:My suggestion is work real hard at finding a small, simple, single family home instead. Those of us who weld, cut, grind, make smoke, dust and stink should not live in a townhouse. I did, and it was the worst 7 years of my life. You really need a little seperation between you and your neighbors to enjoy the hobby. Good luck on your search.
Reply:I put a room on the back of my shop for my compressor. You don't even know its runing when your working, but you can hear it out side. There is a vent under the eve to let heat out and bring air in. I left it on the pallet and set it on 3/4" rubber pads. Reply:nice room i have my compressor outback and since its gonna be about 20ft from my neighbors patio door i will probably need to deaden the sound350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:When they want to deaden noise such as in recording studios they use double layers of leaded drywall to cut sound as well as usually building double walls ( drywall is attached to only one side of a set of offset studs so sound can not transfer thru the studs directly. Forget the BS you hear on This Old House about fiberglass insulation as a sound proofing. If you want to stop vibration, simple heavy mass works better..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:yup definitely gonna have to do something for mine just got it running and its loud  as a side thought i wonder if acoustic ceiling tiles would absorb much sound ??Last edited by umahunter; 06-16-2011 at 08:10 PM.350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Like the man says you need mass to absorb sound. If you can surround it with water it will be very quiet.  Mac

Reply:Run your air intake outside.  That will eliminate about 50% of the noise, allw the compressor to breathe fresh cleaner air.The slower the pump runs, the less noise.  Big pumps turn at 700 rpm or less and last longer too.  Typically 5000 hours. My 7.5 horse Quincy turns 600 rpm and while the intake is in the shop, it's not all that noisy.
Reply:There is an insulation that is specifically designed for sound deadening, sorry I don't remember what it is called. It comes in batts of standard width and thicknesses and is a lot denser than fiberglass, you will still need to isolate the interior wall paneling from the framing.I would use the sound insulation in the walls and resilient channel(looks kind of like z flashing) to hang the drywall or better yet sound board on the inside. The channel isolates the panel from the framing and soaks up some of the vibration.I think that if you do that and suck the air in from outside you should be OK as far as noise goes.
Reply:just build an enclosure and layer the insulation.. you could use blueboard, then layer in some fiberglass insulation over the top of it... dont know if i would use an interior wall or not, if i did i would use drywall...you could also run the intake inside the garage and or up into the ceiling so it isnt outside near the neighbors..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
