Just picked this up for occasional use as a generator. It has the Kohler engine, rope start  no cart. Sold some surplus someone gave me  to finance it (5 frankies). Came with 50'x1awg electrode and 25'x1awg workpiece leads. It was well taken care of and had been stored inside and I bought it from the 2nd owner. Seems to weld and supply power OK but I've never really maxed it out or anything. My first real use was to help power a bounce house fan for my daughter's birthday and the guy setting it up said it didn't have enough power--ie: the fan (rated at 115V/~8A) wasn't blowing "hard" enough. I didn't have any tools, nor a voltmeter (of course  ) but I did have a "spare" generator I borrowed, fired it up, and it ran the fan "faster" and he was happy. Here are my questions:What is the desired setting for the voltage (loaded/unloaded)?What is the desired "run" setting (rod in the slot) RPM?Why do the holes in the muffler and the pipe point straight up? Wouldn't this allow water into the engine if it rained? Or is the muffler aftermarket?Where might I find a used "starter kit"? Where else can I find a Kohler engine and/or parts? (ie: lawnmower?, power equipment, etc.)I ask these questions because I don't have the book for the engine. I do have the Lincoln Owner's Manual but it doesn't elaborate...Thanks for your help! Reply:Bump...No one has any info on this welder/generator? Or how about the Kohler engine? Reply:why don't you just go to : lincolnelectric.com, look up owners manual IM287, download it and have yourself a looksee?Jeff
Reply:If it was mine, I would set the governor with a load so it produces 60 Hz.  This should turn out to 3600 Rpm.  Thats all I know David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:What they said but would like to add that it should have ran that should have ran 4 or more of those fans as long as you started them 1 at a time. It should have only taken a few seconds to get that fan motor up to speed.

Reply:Thanks for your responses, people! I'll elaborate below>>> Originally Posted by Me!The desired would be the same voltage loaded and unloaded.  Depending on what type of voltage regulation it has you may not have any control of this. Run RPM will be determined by what type of generator it has but 99% will be at 3600 RPM.  Engine governor speed is set by the frequency of the generator output.  For a mechanical governor with droop no load should = 63Hz max and full load = 58Hz min. I should mention that the speed rod had loosened up so I'm not sure of the "stock" setting. There is an "idle", non-notch setting then pull the rod out to the notch and that is the "run" setting. The governor does compensate for load--such as when welding so that is a good thing.Set by Hz--Brilliant! Now I'll have to get a new meter , maybe one with a tach function too but for now I'll use the Dreysit.Hu, maybe some one made a boo boo...Got a picture?I looked in the local hardware store and there is the muffler--regular 1" pipe thread. I don't know what the original looked like but the one on it now looks similar to the poor quality picture in the Owner's Manual. I picked up a couple street elbows and will be turning it sideways and down with a couple tacks to keep it from loosening...The Internet!  And then ebay once you know what you need.Regarding a electric starter "kit", I may keep the standard rope start for now as it has always started on the second or third pull when cold, first pull when hot. The key is knowing the "trick". I have since mounted it to a recycled A/V cart from a school (with pnuematic tires!) and a battery, etc. would just make it that much harder to pull. Now, is the generator rated for 50 or 60 Hz? What are the specs on the name plate?

Reply:Well if you have an old 120vac clock (the kind with gears and a motor) you can plug it in to your generator. Now you need another accurate clock, or watch or whatever with a second hand.Just compare the speed of the clocks, if the one powered by your generator is running faster, turn your governed speed down, or just the oppisite if your generators clock is running slower. There is also a method with 2 120v incadesent light bulbs in series. You connect your generator's neutral your 120 volt power from the grid. You connect a wire from your hot leg on the generator to the 2 lightbulbs that are in series, and then one from the other side of the bulbs back to the hot leg of your grid power. The lights should come on. Now start your generator. the lights should start flashing. when they are flashing the slowest (just slowly drifting on and off) you are very very close to your 60 hertz.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:I'll draw up a schematic of the light method when I get a chanceJoewww.CummingsHauling.com
