It needs an oil "slinger" behind the front seal too.  Wait till you have to put valve keepers in that sucker.  I have a tool for that I am sure they are easier to work on in a welder than a forklift.Clark forklifts, Harley Davidson and Detroit (leaktroit) diesel.  All in the same group. Don't jump all over me, that was a long time ago.DavidLast edited by David R; 11-08-2007 at 09:20 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Scott, since this your thread and its WAAY off topic,   As you make posts, it Solderer will change to something else.  Its not a big deal.  It takes like 25 or 100 ore something, I am not sure. The beemer is not fast by today's standards, but dependable as can be.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:No offense intended.  This is just a SWAG as I have no hard facts to back it up, but I think leaking H-D's went by the wayside after the AMF years.  I've taken the York, PA. factory tours 9 out of the last 10 years during their Open House event, the end of September.  Talking to many, many employees has given me the impression that quality design and quality control go hand in hand.  Of course I didn't stroll up to a worker in his work area and start badgering him\her with questions.  These were off-duty workers who volunteered for tour duty.Case in point, regards welding:  There was a display of unassembled frame and sheet metal parts, then a finished '08 Rocker model.  All frames are welded by robot.  I asked if these painted frames were rejects just being used for the tour.  The tour guide asked, why?  I pointed out 2 bad welds...1 with a pinhole, the other that wasn't directly on the joint...on the same frame.  When he said he'd find out, I thought it was just so much lip service.  10 minutes later, and at another part of the plant, that same tour guide was holding the blue painted frame up to someone who certainly wasn't dressed as a welder, so I assumed he was an inspector or engineer, and was pointing out the flaws I had mentioned.  Perhaps that frame was a reject, getting used for the tour before being scrapped.  Perhaps it was a pre-production piece, not intended to be asembled.  I have no idea.  All I know is that employee cared enough about what his plant produced, to investigate a possible defect.  I would think the same care goes on at the Milwaukee engine plant.I doubt that my Fatboy will rack up as many miles as your BMW.  I don't cruise the interstates.Nice pic of your BBQ!WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:I know the new Harleys don't leak.  I have worked on a few.  They have silicone formed gaskets just like the cars do. Grooves in the cases for the gaskets and things that really fit.  I just can't forget them when I was a youngin.  Have you ever kick started a Harley?    It still amazed me how Harley took such a machine AND image and turned it around so the machines had to be ordered if you wanted a certain model.  Around here its not like that any more, You see a harley for sale on every street corner, but still they do hold their value.  I am not a sheep.David Yeah, AMF was the lowest point in H-D history to me.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Scott healfield - If you have a nicely formed "rope", it can be indexed a bit,so that the seal and cap, don't share the same parting line.Davis R - The longest ride I ever took, was on an R75/5...   At highway speed, when the final drive locked up!Last edited by denrep; 11-11-2007 at 06:51 PM.

Reply:ShieldArc, I think you are absolutely right about AMF.David, we just can't agree about engines. I think the F163 will about run forever in SA200's and I've got an '80 XLH made by AMF Harley Davidson. It has never leaked a drop of oil and still doesn't.
