I have all of my metal laying on the back patio and it is starting to look like a scrap yard. I am very limited on the size of the rack because there is the bbq and table/furniture out there so it had to be a vertical type. In the many pages of search results this one stood outhttp://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/thr...terial-StorageMy version will be about 30"x30"x5'. The shelves for holding short stubs are 12" deep and the other 18" will be vertical storage. I picked up some casters from Northern Tool allthough it probably will not be moveable when loaded. The casters are offset to the side so the bottom of the rack is just above the C/L of the wheels. The plan is to have about 4" of ground clearance with pallet jack pockets underneath that will hold plate steel. The caster plates are 4" channel and 4"x1/2" flat bar for mounting and the gusset.Framework for the short stub shelves is 2"x2"x3/16" & 1-1/2"x1-1/2"x3/16" angle with 1"x1"x1/8" angle under the expanded mesh for extra support. The bar rack will be 2"x2"x3/16" angle with some smaller angle for the dividers that stick out towards the front. To make it easier to bring around back, I'm building it in 3 sections. The two racks will go into the bottom base made out of 3"x3"x1/4" angle.I did not make much progress today but managed to get one of the caster mounts almost done. With much help from CEP, I tried the Innershield 211MP on this project.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:More of the caster bracket. I made 2 passes with the machine set at 19.5v@235ipm making a slight weave. Was at the hardware store picking up the bolts and completely forgot an end wire brush for the drill to clean in the corners. There will be a piece of 4"x1/2" that goes from the top of the channel to between the bolts on the caster. Hopefully that will provide some extra support.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Chris some of those welds look pretty good, maybe just a tad cold. Here is some .068” NR-211 I found in the top of my Dad's barn. It has to be at least 30-years old. Even had some rust on the wire. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:They sure look nice for 30yr old wire.I will bump the heat up on the next 3 parts.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:I was surprised too. There was a discussion here awhile back about NR-211. I mentioned that over the years several welding inspectors told me they never seen any one pass a bend test with NR-211. Now that might have been NR-211, not the newer version NR-211MP. Anyway I welded up a V-butt plate and bent some coupons. Looks good enough to me. Reply:Got a little more work done today. It has been WAY TOO HOT this weekend to spend all day outside. The finished caster mounts, there are a total of 4. The one bead looks funny because I had my finger against the plate as a pivot and it became a little too warm so had to move right in the middle. There was also not much bevel either.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Picked up a new stinger last week and tried it out on the shelf frames with some 7018'sSent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Still need to add the center braces on the shelves but wanted to get the frame welded up so I could get an idea on the spacing. This was done with the NR211Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkLast edited by Chris T.; 05-25-2014 at 05:19 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Got the shelf part finished up today.Decided to use 3"x3/16" flat bar instead of the angle. Cut up a sheet of expanded with the plasma for the shelf bottoms. I'm not going to weld them in just in case they get bent up it will be easy to replace. I need to weld on the back piece of expanded and put some flar bar around the very top to cap it off. Still thinking of putting some expanded on the sides to keep all the short stubs of round bar contained.I usually spray everything with the rustoleum rusty red primer. Don't know if that would work or if I should try some self etching primer because of the flux core wire. Dont really want it to rust at the welds but it being outside and placing metal on it will probably remove a lot of paint anyway.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:I really like this idea!    Most of my stock (most people would call it scrap!) is piled and stacked in the corner of my garage, slowly rusting away.  I may borrow this idea in near future!
Reply:Go ahead, I have the same problem. Don't know how many times I've bought new material for a project when there was 20' buried under the pile. The thing I really hate is having all the little pieces of round bar in buckets. It always seems the one you want is in the very bottom.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Chris,Now that you've had a chance to use it I'm wondering how you're liking your new electrode holder?   In case you didn't know that style of stinger was originally designed and intended for wet stick welding underwater where it's a safety issue that the rod can't easily be pulled lose and there's a minimum of exposed metal parts.   Personally I find them a really poor choice (and pain in the a$$) for general welding use topside.   For one thing when ever you stick a rod there's just no easy way to turn it loose from the holder.
Reply:It will take some getting used to but the cable and LC40 plug cost more than the stinger ($20@Northern Tool). Bought a cheap one just to see how I liked it, the LWS has one that is completely round and it looks really nice too. I like that the rod can be bent to what is comfortable and it seems like the rods light easier but that's probably just in my head. Usually try to not stick the rod but had it happen once in a corner and that thing got nice and warm. Had to quick turn the handle and pull it off. It         does hold very securely and there is little chance of the rod pulling out.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:That will work well.     I made something similar using all 1 5/8'' unistrut. I didn't want to buy additional material so used what I had. I got some plastic Coke cases from a buddy that owns a small store. Cases worked good for the small pieces. I don't have any scrap only small pieces.

Reply:The rack looks great. Nice weld and solid frame. Did you weld the sheet or not?

Reply:[QUOTE=Chris T.;4227261]That sounds very creative, lets see some pics.I'll agree on no such thing as scrap untill it can't be chucked in the lathe or mill.here it is, I pulled out a couple of the trays. All left over unistrut.
Reply:Thats really neat. It amazes me how much weight uni-strut will hold.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:[QUOTE=Chris T.;4232321]Thats really neat. It amazes me how much weight uni-strut will hold.I didn't have enough ambition to unload it.   As for weight, I know each shelf has at least a 100 pounds on it. I have one of the Coke cases filled solid with 1/4'' flat stock that I would not want to try and carry out. Not to mention the top shelf has some heavy stuff too. I made it so milk crates would slid below.   The guy that invented unistrut and all it's accessories is sitting on the beach watching the sun. He must be worth a couple of bucks .
Reply:BD1, how wide are the shelves? I tried to limit the width of mine to 30" for two reasons #1 everything that's going on it will be solid bar stock. #2 anything larger than 30" will not fit through the screen room door. I have some larger round bar stock from heavy equipment pins >2.5" dia that I've been thinking of getting one of them mesh bulk pallets with the wheels to store that stuff in since it's around 3'-4' long and I really don't want to cut it down.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Mine is 32'' and the shelves are 14'' deep. It's 14'' because I got 24 pieces from the  dumpster at work.     I miss dumpster diving !Since I'm cheap, I got a golf club bag for free that works pretty good to drop steel into. The club dividers help keep it sorted. I had some left over 3'' and 4'' PVC schedule 40 that works great for storing rod in.
Reply:Little more work on the rack before lunch. Used them little StrongHand Mag Tab things to hold some flat bar so I could cap the angle.Welded a piece of flat to the top of the shelves so it can be bolted to the vertical bar rack.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Cut some 3"x3"x1/4" angle to make the base. The two pieces will be the left & right sides of the vertical bar rack. The flat bar is where the vertical angles will be attached.Time to do some more work before the afternoon rain moves in.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACEThe rear upright for the vertical rack.Finished product will look something like this http://m.globalindustrial.com/m/p/st...-2000-capacityI could have bought one but the 39" width is a little too big for where I'm going to put it.It will have 2 or 3 spots for short pieces behind the main angle.Attachment 738441This Fabshield wire is my new friendIt was a fairly windy day and had no problems with gas blowing away and the clean up is soooo easy.Sent from my SPH-L710 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:This is what I came up with using metal on hand. This is for flat sheet! For Horizontal...........the bottom 3 shelves.............separated carbon and aluminum.
Reply:Nice job on the rack. Where did you find that little shelving unit, it looks like it's only about 3' long or is that just the picture? My Lowes & HD have ones like it but they are 4'-5' long and >$100.Hopefully I'll be moving my stuff into a warehouse soon and not have to worry about using the back patio as my material storage.Sent from my GT-P3113 using TapatalkLast edited by Chris T.; 06-08-2014 at 06:30 PM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
