Few weeks ago there was a thread about stingers. Someone posted a picture of a Stinger V. I had never seen anything like that before. Just being a hobbyist I’m always looking for ways to improve my welding. WOW! This is the nicest stinger I’ve ever used! Really holds the rod in place. And fairly light weight too.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Nicely done! Ive been meaning to buy one of those stingers.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I’ve used the Bernard Short stub, and the Twister. When changing sizes of rod the Twister is a real PITA! The Short stub is a very good stinger, but somewhat heavy. Reply:HAHAHA whaaaaateeevvvverrrrr CEP! Hey had a weldor call me out today in the shop. He had to splice together a beam and was boasting about his welds. Said hey mr inspector come check this out. So I did and he was telling me how everybody in the shop should weld like him. No spatter, no undercut, good looking stringer pass. I said yea man the welds look good, but what about your corner tie in and the side of the beam... they have to be filled in a little more. So he got all hostile and said I bet you cant make a better tie-in than me in the web. So reluctantly I said hold on let me go get my hood and show you how a STICK welder runs Flux cored. Lol so I came back ran me a few passes in the web while he watched. I finished up and said here ya go buddy and walked off. Did not hear one word from him after that. That was just about 3 hours ago before lunch.
Reply:Andrew that is a perfect example of, be careful who you draw a line in the sand to! Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Lol oh yea. that reminds me yesterday he was by a unit I was working on that had undercut on the bottom side. So I pointed it out and this guy I was talking about above comes by and looks at it and around the topside of the unit. Doesn't say anything, continues to punch holes on the piranha. About 20 minutes later I walk by him and he says you didn't mark the undercut on the top of the unit. I said what undercut? He said your the inspector, you know everything about welds so you tell me.... you didn't see it? I said no, I saw it along the bottom, but there was none on the top. He swore up and down that it was undercut on top and said I don't know what undercut is if I didn't see it. That comment there made me lose respect for the guy. So I walked back to the unit thinking in my head wtf is this guy talking about. I looked and it was a line next to the toe of the weld. When they sandblasted the unit they did not hit it hard enough so the mill scale was barely visible along the toe. No undercut once so ever. I walked back over to him and told him what it really was and he continued to say I don't know what im talking about and that was definitely undercut. So I brought out the knowledge and said even if it was undercut buddy it was waaayyy less than 1/32 so its good in my book and walked off. LOL
Reply:Majority of the welding inspectors I’ve been around, if they can’t hang their finger nail in the undercut, it’s acceptable.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:yep, that's what I go by usually. If I know when the unit is painted the undercut will pop out to the eye I will have it repaired, but if it is so close that you will barely be able to know it can slide on through. I have had the guys repair the undercut and it looked way worse than before. Sometimes you have to choose a grey area with inspecting issues like that.

Reply:yea after I said that I went back to the site and looked at it again..... But hey that's what duck tapes for right? Cant duck it...........      ..... lolHey you would be AMAZED! on what we had to work with offshore!!! I have used ground clamps for stingers man! I welded pipe 3 days straight with a ground clamp until they sent another stinger out!! I can prevail!Last edited by AndrewDavenport89; 05-07-2015 at 04:55 PM.
Reply:That Stinger doo-dad is pretty, but I'll stick with my Lenco Twister.I usually weld one size of rod all day, so I can spare the extra three seconds to change from one size to the other. It also fits in tight nooks and crannies since it doesn't have a handle sticking out. And I can drag my lead anywhere I want without it hanging up on every little bump and/or leaving pecker tracks everywhere. Try that with your Stinger.Besides, the Twister doubles as a microphone for singing along with the mp3 playing on my phone in my hardhat.

Reply:I am a 64 year old hobbyist welder with cataracts.I'm pretty sure a 70 dollar stinger can't overcome that.I'm even more sure I will never find out.CEP, I have a feeling you could make that same weld using a Harbor Freight ground clamp for a stinger:-)Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Reply:I too had cataract surgery, I opted for the Crystal Lens accommodating (focusable) implants.  They are flexible so the muscles in my eyes can focus for either near or distant vision. At drivers license renewal time, 76th birthday, I was able to get the corrective lens restriction removed from my new license.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap.
