I'm new to this so I'm wondering what the seasoned welder chooses for a helmet for either TIG or Stick? Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLast edited by Ron083; 04-08-2014 at 10:59 AM.

Reply:A plain old school fixed shade hood.
Reply:Upside down or out in the sun I use a FiberMetal pipeliner fixed shade. For everything else I use an auto-dark Miller.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:Plain old flip front with a fixed shade except when on a job that requires hard hat usage at all times. I find those set-ups so frustrating I usually change out the fixed shade for an auto-dark.
Reply:Primary. 1949 FiberMetal Pipeliner for SMAW/GMAW; 2014 Pipeliner, mod'd with Sellstrom FlipUp Lense, for GTAW. All fixed shades, glass Au-coated lenses. Standby Reserve. Lincoln Viking ADF for GTAW."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I only use a fixed shade at the moment for Stick Welding. But an auto darkening helmet in on my purchasing list. Hope to get me one soon.
Reply:I like my miller pro-hobby shade 10 auto-darkening. Simple and cheap at about $100. Daily use for about 6 years now.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Standard 'ol Jackson with wide glass with a #12 GOLD lenz...1984 vintage!Used everyday at some point.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:I don't usually tell people to buy stuff from Harbor Freight but, I was on a job 4 years ago and my helmet got smashed and I needed another helmet to finish up. There was a HF store close by so I went over and bought a auto darkening helmet for $35.00 and it's still working well. It has never flashed me and it gets used quite a lot.For someone just getting started it might be an affordable option. I prefer fixed shade helmets over an auto darkening helmet.
Reply:fibre-metal flip front fixed shade with cheater.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:at work ive been using a auto darkening helmet from harbor freight for almost 4 yrs all ive done was swap the headgear out after a few months with a ratcheting jackson and added a piece of leather to the front to protect my neck from flash ( mig welding aluminum and steel semi trailers) at home i use another hf auto darkening for mig and a jackson shadow flip front shade 10 for stick. i set all my auto darkenings at shade11
Reply:Jackson Baldor WH70, a late Christmas present to myself, from Amazon. Didn't score as well as some on the what-price-is-it-today deal. That was an upgrade from my Northern Tool AD, not a bad helmet itself. Still keep a Jackson HSL 100 static helmet as backup, use it every now and again.
Reply:Jackson Nitro. No batteries. Solar charge, 2.5 years put it on and strike an arc. Only time it has flashed me is when its in tool box for a while (like 3 weeks or more) with no light. Give it 3-5 min and good to go. Inexpensive @ $125 or soLincoln MK 250, Syncrowayve 351, Cutmaster 151, SA 250D, bobcat 225 and want more.4 Daughters, 6 cats, 1 dog, 1 wife and don't want anymore.
Reply:I don't use a rotary phone anymore and I don't use anything but an auto-dark helmet anymore either. I have a single shade (10) Speedglas Utility that I've had for 6or 7 years and I very much like it, more because it's very comfortable than anything else. I also have a Lincoln Viking (3550, variable shade) that works beautifully but has aterrible headband -so bad in fact that it will probably be headed to EBay for sale with a Miller somewhere in my future.

Reply:If you're learning, I think an adjustable shade auto dark will help you learn much faster. It lets you put both hands on your work and see what you're doing.

Reply:had a miller big window elite was nice if you welded at a table, any out of position it was worthless on tig, nice for anything else thou and don't drop it from more than 2ft it won't live not made for any kind of field use, I just use a 25.00 Jackson 4x5 with a cheap gold shaded lens and a pair of dollar store cheaters under, looking at the lowes auto dark for 100 bucks its got 4 sensors and as fast reaction for 150-175 less than the big money elite I do like the auto dark for tig on smaller tube but I will never pay big money for one again unless I need one for my daily work where it will pay for itself by increase or quality of getting job done, with that said don't buy a crappy helmet that won't protect your eyes because of slow reaction, off topic any body used the lowes 1/25000 sec. 4 sensor hood
Reply:In the test booth an AD is nice but when it comes down to real world work I don't want my a55 chewed for changing batteries or some other BS with an AD. Most of my welding is outside and i use a pancake hood with an Athermal gold ten. Its the closest i could find to a American Optics without spending 500 bucks. In my pipeliner i run a Lincoln super vis and I like them too.
Reply:My everyday hood is my Hornel Speedglas 9000X that I bought new in 2000 and my back up is a standard Fibre Metal with a fixed shade 10 gold lense that I've had since 1992.
Reply:Had Jackson auto darkening hoods since they first came out with updated models along the way...the last hood I purchased was a Speed Glass 9100xxxhttp://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1...D550/ry%3D400/http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps17ff1b77.jpgLast edited by B_C; 04-19-2014 at 06:04 PM. Reply:I like my Jackson halo fixed shade with the 370 headgear and #11 gold lens. I also have a miller mp-10 but hate the headgear miller makes, designed to be up or down not flipped down. For on site work, our of position ect, just a standard fixed shade Cigweld mask.In a workshop, Mig welding all day, or on site using flux core or exotic (read carcinogenic) welding rods i use a speedglass Adlfo
Reply:Basically it's like asking which kind of underwear people use/like. But probably, folks will not be offended if you ask to try their welding helmet. Which is the best option if you can do that. Reply:I like my Jackson Trusight variable. It's light and comfortable to wear. The lens is much clearer when welding than any other helmet I have owned. I can see the weld when tigging small parts, although I always have a shop towel taped across the back of the helmet to prevent back-lighting.
