I worked with my grandpa for a few years building metal buildings around here. I've kinda gotten into it doing it on the side here and there. I just resigned from my job a few weeks ago, turns out firefighting was just not my calling. I've built up a good client base and gotten a good name out for myself working on my off days. Just kinda wondering what do you guys charge for metal welding type jobs. I've been figuring $62 dollars an hour $47 for me and my running cost then $15 an hour for my helper. Does this sound high should I vary it by job. I don't get the job every now and then I don't know if it because of price or they just decide not to do it. The jobs I do get the customers seem pleased. My grandpa said he always took price of material and charged that same amount on top for cost of labor. I just don't wanna feel like I'm raping anybody at the same time I gotta have money to make it when I don't have work.
Reply:that seems low for an hourly charge with a helper. I know most guys charge close to that for one guy. If you can truly cover your costs with that and make enough then I dont see a problem. If your customers are happy you must be doing something right. Remember everyone today is cheap, thats probably why you didnt get some jobs you quoted, Its not worth losing money to get a one time job. Dont be afraid to charge what you need to make and what it is going to take to finish the job.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:I've built metal buildings fo 35 years now and I charge just like your Grandpaw. Unless it's a bolt up. Then I charge by the square foot of tin coverage, walls and roof. Windows and doors are extra.
