We got this 3-point post hole auger from my wife's uncle a few years ago. He said he wouldn't ever use it again so we could just have it. too good to pass up for sure.the auger is supposed to be held on by 2 cross bolts, but when we got it only one was installed. they had the top hole in the auger bolted to the bottom hole on the shaft. we never paid much attention and just used it the way they had it. on the very last hole we needed to dig the auger bound up in the hole and created a project for me. ... this was 3 years ago.they were also kind enough to install a Grade 8 shear pin ....This is why you don't use a Grade 8 shear pin!!!next post
Reply:Fast forward to today ... it's father's day and i can do any stupid thing i want ... so i decided to fix it finally.that, and we are going to need it here soon, so it all works out i tried to salvage the top of the auger and beat it into shape with a BFH, but it was too mangled to salvage.so the only thing left was to cut it off.i cleaned up the hole while i was at it.when it twisted off the auger it also buggered up the shaft as well, so i ground that down flat so the auger wouldn't hang up when trying to put it back together.next post
Reply:i could have left it alone at this point and used it this way, but i with the way it tore out last time, i figured it would be best to have both bolts installed if possible.but, what to do, it mangled the top beyond use.as it turned out, there was just enough of the top ring i had cut off that could be used to tie the top bolt into the auger shaft. So i ground down an edge, shined them up and welded them on as tabs.re drilled the holes and got it as good as used.now all i have to do to put it back together is get some softer bolts for the auger shaft and the shear pin so that this doesn't happen again.
Reply:one more pici spray bombed it all black when i was done.good as used.
Reply:Nice quick fix.Question though, could you have gone further down the shaft and just made new holes? As you clearly know those augers have tremendous torque will those tabs have the lateral strength to last?
Reply:Looks good .Could you slip a pipe over the auger to beef it up some?

Reply:I'll have to make a template and see if that is possible or not. It looked to me like if i tried to shorten it that the bottom bolt would interfere with the top of the auger flight.I had thought about shortening it but couldn't figure out how to locate the new holes with the old ones being destroyed. Quite honestly, the tabs for the top holes were an afterthought. It worked quite well last time i used it, with the exception of getting it all jammed up on the last hole. i think the auger wouldn't have torn like that if the shear pin would have sheared like it is supposed to (had it not been a grade 8)This may be worth considering, though. I got the auger frame mounted on our new (to us) tractor, and the 3-point doesn't lift the auger blade high enough. I'm in the process of making a new mounting point so that it will lift higher, but another 2 or 3 inches would help tremendously. |
