Guys, I've got a 305 lincoln and just put a new paint job on it. It is aircooled and I'm thinking about wrapping the muffler since it's under the enclosed case. I figure it will cool Temps inside the case and generally help everything. Including paint life which it previously wrinkled powder coat. Has anybody experimented with this before!? Good or bad results? Thanks guysSent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

Reply:I don't know what Texas is a saying but just for the heck of it do the experiment. I see it having an effect.

Reply:Like excessive heat build up in exhaust that expands and cracks pipe. But I've never done it so I was looking to see who hasSent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Reply:Being old I just don't understand why they have to be totally enclosed. Especially w/ air cooled engines. Texasbest, don't know the shape or OD of your muffler, but how about finding some straight exhaust pipe 1" diameter larger and just build a heat shield around the muffler. Or is the pretty chrome stack possibly the culprit.                                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:It will definitely help since that case is so enclosed. A LOT less heat will radiate through the muffler into the case.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:The enclosed cases are so to help reduce noise. An insulated muffler will keep under good temps reduced for sure.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Did you know that a thin wrap of insulation may actually increase the amount of heat lost from the muffler?  Crazy.  http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/Cr...sOfInsulation/
Reply:That's some good information engineer.  But would that happen with insulation specifically designed to ruduce heat loss?  Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Reply:Probably not.  I'm kinda assuming this means a thin wrap tightly bound on the pipe. It's hard to decipher what practical value it has besides making sure to use insulation that seems thick.

Reply:I hope it works like it says and all the heat goes out the exhaust without a problem. But I think you have a great point. I'm not sure. I sure hope not. On those 110° days, it might start worrying me. I wish there was a definitive answer.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Reply:Looks good. It shouldn't make the engine run hotter, and will not likely really do anything. The muffler is at the exhaust point of the engine cooling air, so the hot air from the engine is blowing past it and out the back. These welders move a lot of air so it doesn't linger in the cabinet. The heat radiating from the muffler is just blown right out the back. What really surprises me is the nearly straight up exhaust pipe. You would think that rain would build up in them. If it were mine it would have a flapper.
Reply:Heat wrap can cause headers to rust out quicker... It absorbs moisture (dew) when the engine is not running and holds it there until you run the engine again.
Reply:Today's snowmobiles all come with insulated exhaust pipes and mufflers. Not only does this reduce under hood temps, it also reduces noise. Reducing under hood temps also helped promote longer drive belt life by reducing heat with the clutches. Snowmobiles always have snow entering the hood which melts on warm surfaces. There's nothing wrong with insulated exhaust systems.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:It maintains higher exhaust gas velocity out the exhaust too, which increases performance a bit.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:Unless the muffler is stainless steel, I predict you will be buying a new muffler.  You can protect the paint with an insulated heat shield attached to the muffler or the cabinet.  Provide an air gap between the parts, and insulate the cabinet side of the heat shield.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
