Reply:I hated sharpening bits by hand. I eventually bought an Oliver 510 Drill sharpener. This monster will sharpen bits up to 3" in diameter with amazing accuracy. I can get a perfectly sharpened drill bit that is 2" diameter in about a minute. Perfect chip produced from both cutting edges.Granthttp://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:we had on of the sterling grinders pictured below in the mold shop i worked at...  it did a nice job sharpening drills, was odd to get the hang of it because of the angle you pushed the drill over the grinding stone, but after you got use to it, it was very easy ,and did do a great job..  was awesome on larger sized drills, but we went to allied spade drills..  i dont know if it would thin the web, i always did thinned the web by hand and then put the drill in the grinder.. would love to have one at home, so when my brothers and friends come over packing a box of drills to be sharpened i could point them to the grinder and let them do it themselves.Last edited by brucer; 07-10-2011 at 12:10 AM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:Thats a good article.. I just sharpened my first drill bits recently..It was easier than I thought..I need more practice but It sure beats trying to rub through  metal with a dull bit...I read through an old cleveland drill co booklet i found "use and care of twist drills" like 5 times in a row ,when I was layed up and bored recently
Reply:Brucer,  Here is one identical to mine. It is amazing to watch it run. The stone oscillates and moves in and out simultaneously while a 2 jaw chuck turns to hit each flute in a rhythmic fashion.Granthttp://cgi.ebay.com/OLIVER-ADRIAN-DR...item35a7f7bfe7http://jackalopefab.com/MM210Synchrowave 200DXMiller XMT350 w/60series feederMiller Bobcat 250 with SGA 100 and spoolgunHTP PlasmaFull Machine shop with everything
Reply:Looks like the same one we had at work, Robins AFB, could do 2 and 4 flute drills.Russell
Reply:Great article - I am afraid to ask this, but why not use the drill dr?  I seem to be able to easily and routinely recover my drill bits with it (although I just buy new 1/8 and smaller in bulk).Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
