my dad needs me to weld an exhause pipe for his kohler motor on his tractor.its a 1/16 thickness (wall size) and im thinking 3/32 7018 at about 65-70 amnps and i know thats a little cold for 3/32 but its really thin metal. or should i use 6013.if i should use 6013 can you give me some advise on the amp rangehelp would be appreciated thanks
Reply:If I had to weld something that thin up with stick, I'd look for some 1/16" rods or 5/64" rods. I've seen them in 7014 and 7018 at Tractor supply as well as 6013.http://www.tractorsupply.com/welding...tainer-3948304http://www.tractorsupply.com/welding...tainer-3948312Suggested amps should be clearly marked on the packages for each rod..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:lately at work ive been repairing alot of intakes and exhaust systems. most of what im working on are 1/16" and thinner, some up to 18 gauge on small kubota and deutz diesel engines. Before i started working at my current job, everybody was stick welding everything, and while it worked, they would often blow through or do a really crappy job - so i decided to introduce them to oxy-acetylene brazing and fusion welding. with the older rusted out intakes ive had a lot of good results with the brazing, as well as with the exhaust systems, brazing seems the way to go. Now i take my time and thuroughly clean the weld area of all the previous welds, as well as paint and debri and take my time cleaning the weld once its finished (removing excess flux) - Ive found that also makes a world of difference with these thin exhaust and intake pieces. Ill see if i can take a few pictures of the last one i repaired
Reply:OP, put where you  are located.  I would be happy to TIG weld that for you,if your close enough to get it here.T.
Reply:i goter done about a week ago 1/16 7018 at about 55 or 60 ampsjust had to control the heat and worked out good
