I am using a lincoln 175 220v mig with 75/25 argon/co2. When I am welding it will not run a bead. I started to watch the wire burn. When I pull the trigger for wire feed and the wire is touching the metal it starts the burn but then the wire burns as if a fuse was lit, like it is burning up the wire. All this as I am just holding the trigger. About a second later it retouches the metal and starts another burn cycle. All this is happening without me moving the position of the gun. thus no bead and a lot of splatter.I played with the temp setting and the wire speed and gas flow using different combos and the wire was burning itself before touching the metal every time...suggestions?-brian
Reply:1)  hold your gun pointed away from the workpiece.  2)  pull the trigger so that wire begins to feed.3)  With a glove on, gently grab the wire between the spool and the rollers.  4)  Watch the spool to see that it is turning smoothly, with minimal jolting when you pull and release the trigger. My guess is that you have a problem with your wire not feeding smoothly. However, I did once use a Lincoln mig machine that fluctuated voltage up and down, and it will cause it to do the same thing.
Reply:I will have to try grabbing the wire at the rollers.I too thought it was a wire feed issue, so I did one other test.  I pulled the trigger and watched the wire as it fed.  It did not feed odd...seemed smooth.1972 Ford Bronco Sport - 4.5 inches of lift runing 35x12x5 BFG
Reply:Brianbronc - How much stickout, (distance between contact tip, and work) are you running? Is the wire glowing red and then burning off, or burning up in an instant flash?
Reply:Each time it has happened to me, it was a wire feed issue.  Make sure you follow your manual's procedure exactly for loading and tensioning the wire and drive spools. When you pull the trigger, try pointing the wire at a piece of wood as if you were trying to weld it.  What happens?Try a new contact tip.  Is it the right size for the wire?
Reply:What size of spool of wire are you running? I have an older version of the same machine. It will run 10 pound spools with no problems. It will run the smaller spools for a while but when it gets to the end of the spool it won't pull the wire off the spool no matter how you set it.
Reply:A bit more information....I got this welder from a buddy that had been using it and he said it worked fine for him.after taking the advice from here I looked a bit closer at things.  I watched the wire feeding into the rollers and it was kinda jerky..hhmmmm1 - the wire is .35 and the tip looked like it had .25 stamped on it2 - the wing nut was so freaking tightafter changing the tip and breaking loose the wing nut it spooled just fine.  Much better bead is being laid.  Just gotta get consistent.thanks-brian1972 Ford Bronco Sport - 4.5 inches of lift runing 35x12x5 BFG
