I made these trees for a client. The client saw some in a mall and ask me to "duplicate" them. The ones in the mall were much heavier and also one piece. I made 10 of them about 600 bent pieces of tubing and round bar. All cold formed. No leaves because the client will put lights on them.material is 1.25" tubing for the base. 3/4" tubing for the main branches 3/8" and 1/4" other branches. The stand about 9 feet tall assembled. The base 5.5 feet. They are a pain to move. Only two tops fit in my 5x10 trailer. They get tangled and are extremely difficult to get appart. They pictures was taken at the clients house. They are doing the painting. Well I got through it and the client was happy.Last edited by tapwelder; 12-02-2008 at 08:21 PM.

Reply:Good job and they look realistic. I might handle building one or two, but ten? No way. Just the tops by themselves look like the mesquite bushs around here in the winter. Also reminds me of a big tumbleweed that has been blown back and forth until just the main limbs are left.

Reply:Great project! More inspirational fodder for my artistically feeble mind. If you have opportunity to do something similar in the future, you might try a making wrappers from a roll of brown kraft paper available at most building supply centers. Wrap a strip of the heavy paper around the tops, secure with 2" masking tape. That might help prevent the tangles, and will look more professional upon delivery. I got one of those rolls from Lowes for less than 10 bucks (36 in x 140 ft). It is real handy to use for making full size paper patterns alowing me to check for fit and make adjustments before cutting out a hunk of plate.-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:3/4" tubing fits nice and snug in the 1/2" emt bender. Perfect for holding the roundness. I haven't tried 1'/2" tubing. Maybe it would tend to flatten out on the bends a little ?? Before I did anything with the tubing I'd buy a couple of sticks of emt just for practice runs, then add the difficulty factor for tubing. Reply:Roll with it, DSW. I have a small hand bender for 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" tubing. Works well and easy to use. Can post a picture if wanted.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
