Compressor Recall

This may be old news to some since I guess it first came out in 2002. But, it worked out for me. I have an older IR Rand 4000 that had developed the dreaded "pinhole leak in the bottom of the tank" syndrome. Since repairing the tank was out of the question, I began looking for a suitable replacement tank and actually found a good 30 gal. for $30. While working on the tank swap I found out that IR used a weird 1.5" opening in the tank for the combination pump output/unloader/differential switch etc. This had initially caused me some head scratching so as I was researching the problem on the web I ran across the IR recall of some 458,000 compressors due to the pinhole leak in the tank problem.After calling the number and giving my ser.# I found out that they are giving me $200.00 off of a new Garage Mate comp. and picking up the old one. I thought it was toast and I'll take the deal. I'll end up paying $320.00 with no tax or shipping. They have another option of just sending a $100.00 check but that really doesn't do me any good.Not bad considering this comp. was originally purchased in '88'.I know the Garage Mate is no longer made in USA but oh well. Money's tight and I need a portable unit for the truck so there it is.Eric
Reply:Nice save!Makes me wonder if sending in those "warranty registration" cards would be good for cases like this. Reply:I admit that I never fill those out. Don't know how many recall notices I've missed over the years but the spam/junkmail situation is pretty bad these days so I prefer the relative peace of not adding to the problem.I never would have found it if I had not been googling my compressor for some info on the tank inlet size.Weird but cool.Eric
