WPS - Welding procedure specification question

What's good. Im currently in welding school and we have a list of different welds we are performing. I am currently TIG welding. So one of the first welds i have been performing is a fillet weld in the 1F position. Anyway's we have a book to refer to that has all the specifications, the WPS. Im in europe and don't know what parts of the world these are used in. Well in this WPS it called for 100-110 amps for a fillet weld on 3mm steel. It called for a A3 weld I think in the usa this is called throat size. A3 just means a throat size of 3 mm. I don't know about you guy's but I found this near impossible. I could not get a nice looking weld nevertheless a 3 mm fillet with this amperage. It wasn't till i said **** IT to the WPS and decided to up the amperage and change the size filler rod that it ended up working out. I ended up using an amperage of about 122 amps and a filler rod of 3.2 mm and it was smooth sailing. The weld looked much much nicer and i didn't burn through to the back like i did with the lower amperage. My question is do i have to follow these WPS's to a T or should i just use what works for me? Reply:A3 is Z 4.5you should follow a WPS, but a wps can be wrongwhat is the wire thickness on the wps .

Reply:Yep you failed. You can control weld size and appeareance with travel speed, quantity of wire feed per dip, bead spacing, arc length, and torch angle. You should have followed the WPS and exercised extreme technique to achieve your goal. Reply:A 3mm fillet with TIG is pretty easy. Were you having trouble with your weld being too big or too small? If your beads were too big I'm thinking you're probably using too much arc length. Too much arc length spreads the heat out and creates a larger puddle. If they weren't big enough that means you weren't making enough/big big enough dips with the filler.
Reply:Amperage is a non essential variable. Turn it up.Nonessential VariablesThe welder controls some variables that have little impact on the mechanical properties of the completed weld. Assuming the welder is skilled, as demonstrated by his or her passing the welder performance test, variables such as arc voltage, amperage, and travel speed typically have little effect on the chemistry or mechanical properties of the weld. These are usually considered to be nonessential variables.
Reply:I was having trouble with the thickness. Couldn't get it past a 2 mm fillet for the life of me
Reply:How do you know if that machine's dial is accurate? Did you have a set of amperage tongs on it? You need to set the machine to make an acceptable weld and don't worry so much about what the dial says.I usually set my machine on 260 for TIG fillet welds.

Reply:I guess my question is this then. In the situation where i take a test that i am supposed to follow a WPS would i still pass if i went a little off from the amperage it specifies in the wps? And no i did not test the machines amperage with a pair of tongs or anything.
