I got this wild idea that if I take a steel tire rim and put it at a 45* like a 6G test it would be good to practice getting used the position and atleast getting your beads looking good. I can practice on beveled pipe at school but it takes so long to just cut, take the paint off, bevel, and finally weld and with the school sending me off to go to work in like a week I'd still like to practice at home. I think it seems like a pretty good idea but usually what sounds good to me doesn't sound so good to everyone else so I'd like to get all your opinions on this idea and see if its worth the time just for some practice
Reply:lol, i like it.    i think i'm following you, cut it in two, prep and fit it, and weld

Reply:I think a steel rim would be to big in diameter. 6“ in diameter is about as big as you want to go.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:6-G with Tig, you pretty much have to know how to weld with both hands. With SMAW you can do the whole 6-G test with the stinger in what ever hand you use the most.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:DSW is correct as usual! The smaller the diameter the harder. And 6-G adds a compound angle. You want to have some fun? Run open root pipe with 7018. Reply:Just get yourself a piece of pipe and cut it into pups, bevel them and weld one on the next. When you are done with your pups, cut the welds out and start again.
Reply:the point of your thread was to cut down on pipe prep time and weld instead.    i can totally relate.   when i was trying to learn it at the loxcal college, i found it most economical to me to set the track cutter at angle needed , and cut a bunch of round plate from manhole looking cover slugs out of some stuff they had donated to them.    for me, my time and effort worked out better that way, rather than trying to dress round pipe.    i got most my open root time and practice in that way.    thats why i liked your rim idea cut in half anf fitted together.   thats why you named it cheating, right?Last edited by 123weld; 09-17-2015 at 01:39 AM.

Reply:Use the real pipe. Trust me you will get a better feel for it. And use 2". You will always be tested on smaller pipe.

Reply:Sorry about the double post it won't let me edit. Anyways I cut up some 2" pipe at school today but my teacher said I had to TIG it all the way out. No 6010 root with 7018 fill and no TIG root with 7018. Is there a reason he says that other than thats just how he wants it done because I'm nearly 100% sure I can put a 6010 root with 7018 into that pipe and I just don't understand why he won't let me. Anyone know?
Reply:It has to be his little quirk! 6010 root with 7018 fill, and cap is a very common test.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400Originally Posted by CEPIt has to be his little quirk! 6010 root with 7018 fill, and cap is a very common test.

Reply:Most places in my recent past want 2 inch and under TIG welded all the way out.

Reply:I work in a pipe fab shop, we do work for refineries and power plants, etc. We don't use stick at all. Anything 2 inch and below is TIG. Nuke plants do a lot of TIG out work. Pipelines don't use TIG.

Reply:The clients think it's cleaner. I wish I could use 7018 fill and cap on those goofy little o-lets, but NO!

Reply:All the years I worked around pipe welders, I never paid any attention to how they cleaned the pipes out after welding. But I can sure see where all Tig welded roots would make it a lot easier! Reply:To be a pipeliner or a nuke welder takes years and years of experience. Both of those are at the top of the welding field. There's plenty of work in the oil business these days, also LNG and natural gas related is booming. There's a five year job for Bechtel just now doing dirt work outside Corpus Christi, and there's one ongoing at Sabine Pass. We're doing pre fab for a $6 billion ethylene plant going up in Baytown, TX. There's another smaller ethylene plant going up outside Corpus, too. Those would be easier for you to get into starting out.

Reply:Couple things to think about. Do you like going to the same place everyday? Like working with the same people year in, and year out? Not me! At one time I had a 3-month limit. Then I moved on. One year I quit 13-jobs. Same year I quit 3-jobs in one week. Years later I went to a 3-year limit on the same project. The last company I worked for, I was there for years, but worked all up and down the west coast. Go for years without seeing some people in the same company.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:In my younger days, I really liked moving around a lot. Learning how people did things differently. Once I got a handle on how to build stuff, I never minded working hard. But working stupid wasn’t going to fly with me! Can’t tell you how many times I told my boss he had his head so far up his a$$ he needed a glass belly button to see day light. Packed up my tools and went and found another job.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
