I want to upgrade my 305G to a diesel machine and was looking at the Vantage 300 with a Deutz. Anybody  have any thoughts on these machines. There is nothing wrong with my 305 and welds nice and smooth, and does everything I need to do, just want a diesel machine as my truck is a coal  burner.
Reply:Kinda pointless if your already running the 305G, not much if any cost savings in fuel. However if you need the write off, then yes the Water cooled Duetz is a high torque problem free engine so far, beating the low torque Kubota. This same engine has begun production in the Miller Pro300
Reply:What would the fuel difference be between the 2 machines, also I heard that the Vantage 300 struggles with 1/4 7018 is this true?
Reply:What are the Pro 300 like?

Reply:I have a friend that has a late model Vantage 400 that he will sell me for a good deal, what about these machines. It is a little overkill for what I need and also heard that they are hard on fuel and have had some issues with weld quality.I have welded with it a few times and it didn't seem to have as nice arc as my 305G. If it helps any I weld pipe and do some structural and oilfield fab once and a while.
Reply:Exactly the same technology, your 305G will weld the same as a Vantage 300, or 400, providing they are all tuned to the same frequency, especially as 99% of  the users run in "pipe mode" where the settings are all to 300 amps.I tell guys, why spend the extra cash on a Vantage 400, as it equates to 3  brand new 305G's. Thats 9 years of warranty, and say if you got the extended plan that Lincoln offers, thats 15 years warranty and a new  machine every 3-5 years. So every 3-5 years depending on the warranty plan, presto go out and buy another, and your still way ahead of buying a Vantage, and your Vantage will not last 9 years without a major $$ malfunctionLast edited by Cruizer; 07-23-2008 at 10:13 AM.
Reply:Ya that's  what i was kinda thinking. I filled up the rig last night and diesel is 12 cents a liter more than gas and I can get premium for 1 cent cheaper than diesel. The only other reason I was considering a diesel is they are liquid cooled. I might have a job  and they require a liquid cooled machine (gas or diesel) for some reason I don't know as the biggest rod I will use 3/16 7018. Maybe I will look at a 200D or a 300D with the kubota, as these are tried tested and true. As far as pipe mode, I leave my 305G there unless I am running tig so I guess there is no ad vantage of getting a Vantage. I am going to steal my friends 200D for 2 weeks while he is on holidays and see how it works. Also I was wondering how the new 305G are with the 23 HP engine, are they any better than the old ones and why did they switch.
Reply:I forgot to mention that the guy I am talking to about this job suggested the PipePro 304 but don't know about that one yet.I have used a few in the past and they welded good but I think that's only when they are actually working if you know what I mean.

Reply:So the 23 HP doesn't  have an oil cooler? Yes I am aware of the 200D as my friend has one and loves it. The AC power is no big deal, all I need power for is grinders and maybe a few lights now and again also the CV is no big deal as I never plan to run wire anyways. He also burns 1/4 7018 with it as my 305G wont, not that I never have to but it would be nice if a guy wanted to.The 300D I have ran in the past was nice but it was a little harder to stack than  the 305 on the cap. I have noticed that Miller uses a D1005 engine instead of the DH905 in the past, is there any reason for this.

Reply:Originally Posted by CruizerYour 305 will run 1/4" providing the engine rpm is set tp 62.5 hz measured at the ac 120 auxillay, bet it's at 59 or 60hz. Yes the 200D will put out 375 amps just like a standard Classic 1 built after 1991 or before 1972 SA200, but the duty cycle isn't there.RPM on a welder with ac auxillary is always measured in HZThe 300D will run fine providing it has a 50amp 800 volt control bridge and small heat sink under it. Different manufactures tended to use differnet engines, now they tend to copy one another. The 23 hp Kohler is the same engine used in the Trailblazer 302 gasser for instance. Linclon started putting the commercial water cooled duetz in the Vantage 300, same engine is going into the Miller Pro300.
Reply:Um, no, your machine MUST be set at 62.5hz all of the time.
