Had to do a little build up on a worn shift collar on a towing winch on an tug boat. The manufacturer wanted $4000 for the new part I was able to complete it for about $700.Rough GrindFinal build-up before going to machine shop. Attached ImagesLast edited by 76GMC1500; 07-03-2014 at 12:40 AM.
Reply:Looks like fun. Do they machine it.
Reply:Yes, two circles a quarter inch apart for an oblong hole. An air ram actuates the assembly the oblong hole allows for the change in length around the pivot point. I will try to get a picture assembled next week. Tolerances for thickness were +.005 for diameter were +- 1/32. Not that we care but it's a good place to start. When I was done with it the part was all twisted and tweaked but it's really a crude machine to start with. I figured if tolerances were critical the manufacturer would have used dowel pins of fitted bolts on the end but apparently tolerance was not an issue. I bolted it together and told the machine shop not to touch that but use the pins on the top and bottom as the reference points. The funny part was that as I dropped it off at the shop I warned them about slag inclusions and that they should probably use HSS tooling and not carbide. I have never done anything like this before. They said they only use carbide tooling. Luckily there were no inclusions and I was surprised to have almost no pin holes either in the final machined part.Last edited by 76GMC1500; 07-03-2014 at 02:25 AM.
