I am looking at getting a carbon arc torch. Probably an Arcair k2000 for use with my trailblazer 302. I won't be using more than 1/4" carbons. What compressor do you recommend that I can put in my truck. I would like to get it as light as possible and I am thinking it would need to be a gas driven compressor since I don't want to rob power from my trailblazer.I am a bit confused on the air requirements for that torch since the website says 40 Psi at 8 cfm. But most people say you want at least 90 psi.Eric G.
Reply:I am thinking of this one. http://m.sears.com/sears_ProductDetails.jspIt is small so I can load it and unload it pretty easy for when I am not using it. And it should put out the volume.Eric G.
Reply:That link didn't work for me.It depends on if you're going to be using it on larger jobs. For a couple quick gouges, a smaller compressor will work. I personally would look at a 10-13hp with a 30gal tank, gas drive. I have the K3000, which uses more air than the K2000, but I sometimes have to wait for my 5hp, 80gal 240v electric shop compressor to build up. If you'll be using it alot, don't cut yourself short. On the mobile jobs, I'm lucky enough to have a tow behind diesel comp which puts out 175cfm. A bit overkill, but to have and not need is better than to need and not have!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:They also make small "under hood" screw machines. They put out a ton of air and take up "zero" space in the bed. The down side is they are dedicated to that truck, and they are NOT inexpensive..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I looked at the under hood rotary screw ones. Don't think i am going to that route. I am only going to be using it to gouge out welds. I don't usually need to gouge big welds out. Maybe an occasional piece of machinery might need repair. So far I have gotten by with my OA torch and a scarffing tip.
Reply:BIG!  i have a 60 gallon 5Hp two stage in my shop and it has a hell of a time keeping up with the carbon arcs.    In the field your going to need a pretty decent unit with some balls ot pull enough air.     I second the V-mac underhood compressors.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
