Hello, I have a question about storing. How can I store scrap metal pieces from metal sheets, rods, bars, tubes...? This is a major problem right now, I have no system, we simply throw everything on top of other pieces and a chaos has emerged after couple of years of uncontrolled storing.. The main problem is with smaller pieces of metal sheets in different thicknesses and different material (galvanised, plain, stainless, diamond thread plates..) How do you handle such pieces, do you simply throw away everything that is too small for bigger products, or you use some kind of system? Thanks!

Reply:That is exactly why many major fab shops have a "drops" policy where most scraps go in a scrap bin and get sent to the supplier who is usually also a recycler....The fab shop drops off the bin where they get valuable credit by the pound, then pick up a new supply of materials at the same time. Some fab shops allow citizens to venture in and salvage drops at a better price than they get from supplier/recycler, but they are drying up fast due to liability insurance and the problems scavenging citizens eventually cause. Why do fab shops do this? Because like you screwing with scraps always ends up just like you described where you need the floor space for production and storage of new materials, and the time, cost, and effort required to properly store scraps where they are easy to see and get to is impossible.
