I'm very fortunate that a friend of mine runs an ornamental iron shop here in town, so he's let me take some scraps home and practice on them, and swap out when I use them up.My wife got me the HF 90A flux core welder for Christmas, but I've just been really busy until the welding bug really started hitting me over the summer.  Try to get some practice in once a week if I can.I used up the roll of HF flux wire, and yes it spattered a lot.  I just switched to using the Lincoln flux wire (.030) and noticed that there is considerably less spatter.  This has made me quite happy!  How well does the Hobart flux wire (.030) do?  Similar to the Lincoln, or is the Lincoln better? Also, how often do you have to change wire brushes?   It seems like mine isn't cleaning off the slag as good as it used to.   Should you wait until the slag and metal cool down before brushing? Or should you clean right away?   Does brushing when hot wear out the brush faster? Here are some of my better welds from today.Looks like power on min and wire speed 4 works for me on this metal.  Took lots of experimenting to get this far boys!Last edited by fudge0514; 10-01-2015 at 05:41 PM.

Reply:Can anyone answer the questions on brushes?
Reply:When it comes to T-11 wires, it’s hard to beat Hobart’s 21-B, and Lincoln’s NR-212.Are you talking about a wire brush that goes on a grinder? I wait until the weld cools some before cleaning.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:If your friend were a REAL GOOD friend, he would let you try out some of the welding machines he has in the shop, maybe a MIG too. Then you would relegate your little HF 90amp to door stop duties and get something that will make better welds. YOUR welds may look better with a better machine, and you are just thinking it is you that is the problem. Ask if he will let you run a few beads with his equipment and you will see what I mean, if he will let you.

Reply:It is a very lucky man who's wife buys him welding equipmentOne key is to watch the puddle, and learn how how to react to what you are seeing, in order to keep the puddle consistent in shape and size. You have probably already watched youtube videos that teach about the puddle shape and size.Watch them again and again until you see and realize everything that is going on.Going from watching to doing, all of a sudden, if you had been seeing 90% of what is going on, you will now only see about 20% because things will seem to be happening too fast to react to them. :-)For a while (long while), when running a bead, focus only on size and shape (determined largely by travel speed and manipulation technique), not what you think it will end up looking like.As you get better, you will probably run those same beads on the high setting, instead of low - as everything begins to "slow down" for you.Your welds show me that you have potential, and all you need is more hood time.At some point, you may want to get a bigger machine, but in the meantime, get as good as you can with your machine. You will be able to do lots of cool projects with it.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Hybrid 200Longevity Stick 140Longevity Migweld 200SThermal Arc Pak 3XR

Reply:Whatever you do about wire brushes, do not replace the little chipping hammer that came with the machine with another like it!Silliest thing I have ever seen.If that is the one you are asking about, regarding its lifespan, I understand why you ask. That one will last about a week of light use. A decent wire brush will last a hobbiest for years.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Hybrid 200Longevity Stick 140Longevity Migweld 200SThermal Arc Pak 3XR
