Reply:That's it!!! Plastic welding!!! That's where I heard the term. Which reminds me, I just picked up a small 80W plastic welding kit from HF with the intent of "welding" a cracked hard plastic chicken waterer base. I've never welded plastic before. Does anyone have any tips for me?MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Okidokie everyone.... contain your laughter please. This is the "small" plastic welding kit I bought at HF a few days ago thinking I'd try my hand at "welding" a cracked chicken waterer. In the photo you can see the exact plastic welder I bought for $9 and the cracked chicken waterer. ----I'm assuming based on Jane1's links to machines that look like they cost thousands of $$$ that I should put the little plastic welder in my trunk and drop it off at GoodWill the next time I drive by>>>? Am I correct? It's ok telling me I screwed up... I've done worse before. --Assuming I'm correct and what I bought is the equivalent of a child's toy, where would I go to get 4 or 5 cracked chicken waterers repaired and what should I expect to pay? --Jane1> Thanks for the heads up on plastic welding... I figured when you typed Eg you meant Eq and the link was for me. I just bought my first MIG last year.... there's no way I can afford a plastic welder.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:The chicken waters are not worth the cost of repairing them unless you have the type that uses large pails as resourvoirs, maybe stop by your local bodyshop for structural adhesives, they may have some old stock they may give you, then take a die grinder and bevel the cracks back thoroughly and fill, you have to work quick, no need to pretty it up further. Reply:Plenty of cracked chicken waterers to "experiment" repairing. They get old and brittle and crack in winter. I can try repairing one with the toy kit using a dremel tool to bevel the cracks and I can try one using PVC glue.--Quick question on the PVC glue- all I can find is  Blue or Clear Cement in Oatey's. Should I buy the Oatey's or look for PVC glue in a different brand?MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:The blue or the clear will work for this. Oatey is one of the main brands you will find anywhere, so don't bother looking for another brand.Last edited by Bistineau; 10-05-2015 at 01:36 PM.
Reply:Gotcha, I'll pick it up next time I go back to Menards.... or maybe it was Home Depot where I saw it for sale.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:Oatey sells a lot of different PVC cements. Lowes/Depot carry some. You can usually also find the basic clear cements at Ace/ True Value stores.Clear is usually what works for most PVC plastics. They sell it in different viscosities some times. I've gotten the stuff that is almost like water in consistency, but mostly I get the stuff that is "medium bodied" that is sort of a gell. I want to say I've also found a "heavy bodied" cement as well at one of the specialty plumbing suppliers. I think that may have been for cold weather outdoor use possibly. It's been years since I used any. They also sell a "blue?" one that I believe is for use under wet conditions. I've bought a green one that is for bonding both PVC and ABS plastics together. That's one I haven't seen too frequently, but I found it down at Depot near my parents home when I was doing plumbing for them. A lot of the homes in that area use the black ABS plastic pipes that aren't as common today as they were years ago. This glue allowed you to glue ABS directly to PVC.I forget what the orange one Oatey sells is for, possibly ABS..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:If the toy kit or any of the PVC glues work... it will be money well spent. Replacing the small chicken waterers doesn't so much bother me at only $12 each but the base of one of my heated chicken waterers that I use over winter cracked after 3 years and those are $39.99 to replace. I need heated waterers so I'm not forced to haul hot water out to the chicken coop 3x a day when the bitter cold sets in.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:2 part epoxy is always a fall back if nothing else works.I think you need to stop pampering your chickens. They really don't need a hot bath 3x a day. They can take cold showers like everyone else does. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I violated a cardinal sin in the world of livestock... I named my egg layers. They're pets. I'm hoping this winter isn't as brutal as last winter because I've got a 7-year old chicken out there named 'Ruthie' that I don't want to walk out and find frozen to death. I may bring her in the house for the winter. She's my favorite. I really need to keep my hands off them after they hatch because some of them will be males that need to go to freezer camp but.... they're just too cute. ------If neither the toy kit or the Oakey's work, I'll try a 2-part epoxy.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:The plastic toy welder didn't work. Probably me not working fast enough. I think I'm going to intentionally crack another base that's already got a crack in it to try the toy again.  The Oatey's didn't work. The label said I was supposed to prime it.... maybe that's why it didn't work. The Loctite 2-part epoxy may have worked. I'll let it sit for 2 days then fill it up with water and see if it leaks. --mike837go> That's Herschel.... Herschel the Whore. I picked kitty up from a feed store parking lot last January in the equivalent of a blizzard. Somebody dumped him. I got out of my car and it shot out from beneath another vehicle and charged me. Scared the heck out of me... I thought he was a feral cat gone mad. I froze then tried to get back in my car but he literally scaled the back of me to get on my shoulders before I could slam the door then started head butting me and purring up a storm... I had to take it home. He was only about 6 pounds so we assumed he was a kitten. Our vet said he was actually about 3-4 years old. We de-wormed him and he gained 3 pounds within 2 months.  He's still a small cat but is up to about 9 pounds now.  I do think you're right and he was thinking lunch. I'm pretty sure he'd sink his teeth into anything that he could get to which.... isn't much these days since he's not allowed outside. I bought a wire mesh lid for the aquarium I put those chicks in soon as I realized he was camping out on the incubator drooling while they hatched. ----DSW> He's a definite "keeper". He came with a built in cat toy that he chases when he gets bored (see above, the tip of his tail is white). Walks on a leash like he's a dog with his tail held straight up in the air and is afraid of nothing. Naps in sinks and literally waits for unsuspecting house guests to use the bathroom so he can crawl out of the sink and jump into their laps while they're peeing. If you bend over to scrub a floor, he's on your back making mush mush with his paws. Bend over to pick something up.... he's on your back. Go to sleep and he's in your hair making mush mush and drooling and purring up a storm. Here he is in a lap... he seeks out laps and he's not particularly picky... anyone's lap will do even if they don't like cats. When one person gets up... he looks for another lap hence the addition of whore to his name. I'm really proud of my parking lot "find". --MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. Reply:"Primer" is simply thinned down cement. It helps clean off dirt, ink etc and makes the surface a bit tacky. I use it in critical applications like drain pipes, but in noncritical applications like conduit, I simply wipe the cement on a few extra times on new pipe. If the pipe is old, dirty etc, I'll clean it with soap and water 1st, maybe a light sanding with some sand paper etc then simply glue it. Primer comes in purple ( so the inspector cal tell you prepped the pipe 1st and clear. The purple looks like crap so I don't use it unless I know something will get inspected, then try to use it as sparingly as possible. One thing to keep in mind if you use primer. It's glue. I know a guy who learned this the hard way. He had his helper prime all the fittings and pipe. The helper decided to save time and dry fit all the parts to check dimensions so they could keep going. Even though it had been maybe 10-15 minutes since he primed the pipe and fittings and they felt "dry" when he shoved them all together they glued themselves into a piece you couldn't get apart. They had to scrap all that pipe/fittings and go buy new stuff and start over. Pretty much a wasted day for 2 people between the original fit up, and the trip to go get new stuff and recut everything.Oatey only works on solvent weldable plastics. Not all plastics though are solvent weldable. Some need to be heat welded ( what your tiny soldering iron is for ). Who knows what "mystery" plastic requires. Epoxy isn't a perfect solution. I have a large plastic light fixture I had to make in college as one of my architectural design projects. The white plastic I bought as scrap from a plastics place wouldn't solvent weld, so epoxy was my only choice. 20 years later I've noticed a few of the joints are finally breaking loose. If I'd scuffed the connections a bit more that might have helped but who knows. One thing I have found with epoxies is the more surface area you have, the better things will hold. I occasionally use West Systems epoxy for various repairs on things. I'll try and get a large surface area so I get as much bonding power as possible. "Fillers" like fiberglass can often help strengthen joints.Keep in mind some things like Teflon will be almost impossible to join other than mechanically..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW> I did lightly sand it. Maybe the plastic isn't solvent weldable? I need to leave the last piece I tried repairing sit for a while otherwise I'd flip it and post a photo. I might be back to trying my hand at repairing the plastic with the toy. We'll see if it holds water or not in a few days. One thing, Gorilla Glue didn't work. I tried that first. --mike837go> Thank you so much for the compliment. Reply:Invest in the old metal waterers. They can be used on a metal heater base too for the winter. If it leaks YOU CAN WELD IT ! http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pro...5-gal-capacityhttp://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pro...r?cm_vc=IOPDP1
