I am looking for a tube notcher. I am  not building an airplane or antenna tower or even a bicycle but would like to be able to weld 2 inch pipe at different angles. I am building a bird stand in the shape of a Tee.Common sense would say to spend $200 for the real deal.Has anyone used this product and can say that it will work or offer alternative for notching tubes. Thanks in advance!!
Reply:I'd save my pennies a little while longer and get something that will hold up, like the JD2:link to JD2 notcherThe reviews on that Eastwood model are not too great.
Reply:Chop saw and a bench grinder with a little patience will work for a bird stand.
Reply:Yep, saw method works well.  Especially, if you are only making one.  Do a search on notching.
Reply:4 1/2"cutoff wheel.. then swap to a grinding disk for the radius'. if you plan on more notching in the future then go ahead and go for a jd2 notchmaster.  those cheaper notchers suck..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:My recommendation would be to spend the extra and buy the JMR notcher if you're going to buy one.  Quality counts in these things.  I would never buy the Eastwood notcher (nothing against the company, but their notcher just isn't that good).  I got the JD2 notcher and it's *okay*, but after getting to use my buddies JMR I really should have gotten the JMR instead.  Now if you have a huge budget for a notcher...one of those really nice hydraulic ones that use a shell mill instead of hole saws would definitely be the way to go --Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:yeah, you're probably in the same boat that I was when I bought mine.  I got the notchmaster which is a good tool.  At the time I didn't have the funds to cover the $600 cost of the JMR notcher, but I wish I had gotten it instead.  The JD2 notchmaster is pretty decent, but it definitely lacks the precision of the JMR.  For most general projects though it should cover your needs pretty well.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:2 in pipe ?      CONDOR BIRDCAGE     ????LOLI could not afford $600 for a tubing notcher myself.... Do you have oxy-acet torch ?  Plasma cutter  ?  if yes, then there are ways for any angle intersection to be drawn on graph paper in the curve that needs to be cut.... perhaps transfer that to either asbestos pressed fiber sheet as is used by people making their own exhaust gaskets.... or cut and grind ONE pipe example , split that, clamp to other pipe needing that angle cut and use as template.   As with the commercial metal templates for standard angles available...   You could buy your own plasma cutter for the savings and then make the templates and have the plasma for all sorts of other fun things... like T-REX 3D puzzles..LOLWeldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Reply:I am saying that you might come out better spending the same amount on a plasma cutter in the long run... and utilizing easily self made templates to cut those unusual angle joints...''.....The templates are created using a computer program, and then printed on paper. The template is then carefully cut out with scissors, and taped to the tube, ensuring the printed centre line aligns with the centre line of the tube. After that, it's a simple task of drawing around the template and cutting or grinding the fishmouth to shape. Alternatively, the template can be stuck onto the tube, and the fishmouth ground to the printed line with a carborundum or diamond coated fishmouth grinder.''from : http://www.rorty-design.com/content/tube_work.htmhttp://www.weldingdata.com/pipetemplatesample.htmOH... this is cool.... for a chop saw ....just plug in the dimensions and click on the calculator... http://snip.awardspace.com/Last edited by GBM; 09-28-2011 at 06:58 PM.Reason: found new to me stuff..Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
