I need, (want) a TIG machine and would appreciate some input from you guys.  I am not really brand loyal but if it has a weak point, I will find it, I just need something that is bulletproof.  It won't be used as a production machine, just used occasionally for aluminum, titanium and some stainless.  Needs to be 3 phase and 50HZ, (shop machine)I kinda like the features and price of the Miller Synchrowave 350 complete outfit, but without the cooler, (do I need the cooler, I'm thinking less stuff to break without it?) any thoughts, suggestions?  What's the difference between the 250 LX and DX?6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Have you looked at http://www.millerwelds.com/products/tig/ ?The answers to your Miller questions are all there.  IMHO, if you decide to buy a complete Synchrowave 350, I would add the cooler.  You're already going to spend an assload of money, so why not tack on a few bucks more and have the machine be able to work to its capacity?  That machine is a beast... when you crank it up for any period of time (air cooled), that torch is going to scream and you'll wish you had a cooler running.  Worrying about a cooler being something else to break is tantamount to having A/C in your car.  Yeah, you could do without it, but it is damn nice to have and makes life a lot easier.  And yes, there is a possibility of it breaking, but that's the exception, not the rule.Miller Dynasty 200DXMillermatic 210 w/ Spoolmate 3035Hypertherm Powermax 380JD Squared Model 32Multiple fabrication tools & equipmentFull Powder Coating Setup
Reply:I think I'd look at a Dynasty over the Syncrowave for 3 reasons. 1. The inverters run on any input power. 2. The dynasty is lighter and shipping half way around the world has to be expensive. Which might even out the prices 3. the arc shaping capability for aluminum. That said, I could not say anything bad about a syncrowave. I suspect that the sync is probably a little more reliable, but have no evidence for that.I'd say the cooler is better than no cooler, especially on the big stuff you work on. I have never heard of a cooler break down. And even if the cooler breaks down, you can still run the water cooled torch from pretty much any water source (using a filter) on a total loss system.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:GET THE COOLER ... and for service lifes sake you should go with the non-inverter one
Reply:12 years with my current syncro 250 and its never been in for repair. I'd go with 350/ tig runner pack. You will not regret the water cooler, torches and cables are much smaller and lighter and run cooler than air cooled. I considered trading my 250 for a Dynasty 350 untill I learned they are not as reliable as transformer machines. Ideal deal would be 350 Syncrowave with 200 Dynasty for small portable stuff. I am looking to eventually get the Dyn 200 for portability and keep Syncro for reliability. PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
Reply:I'm leaning towards the Synchrowave but the literature says they are single phase??  I really need 3 phase.  SpecificationsInput Power•Requires 1-Phase PowerRated Output•350 A at 34 VAC, 40% Duty Cycle•300 A at 32 VAC, 60% Duty CycleWelding Amperage Range•3 - 400 AmpsNet Weight•496 lb (225 kg)6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:I have cut my power consumption in half since I replaced all my single phase transformer tigs with 3 phase inverter tigs.As far as reliablility, over 30 years of tigging, I have found inverter tigs to be just as reliable as transformer tigs. The biggest issue to what drove me to inverter tigs is they just put out a better arc on the big stuff.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:I sent for a quote on a Dynasty 350 complete package, with the cooler, will order it tomorrow when the quote comes back.  I will let you guys know how I like it when it gets here, should be here in about 2 months.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:Originally Posted by castweldI have read articles about inverters being more effecient  but under what conditions are you saving 50%? I thought abut trading off my Syncrowave but after looking at the way I use my machine (arc time small % of a work day) the extra expence of buying a new machine would not save enough electricity to be economical. From what I understand an inverter "on" for 6 hrs of an 8 hr shift would save money, and actually pay for purchase of new machine over yearly use, but in my situation (job shop) my average arc time averages 1/8 ti 1/4 of my day. The first syncro I bought is still operating in the shop I bought it for in 1978. In 30+ years use suspect there will be more problems with inverters. When I go to my lws I see a lot more inverters scrapped  than I like.Peter
Reply:Millers case studies bragging on the Dynasties do not claim .5 less consumption, maybe they need to talk to you for a promo. If your machines "run" 8hrs a day I would think you are going through more "weldors" than welders!PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
Reply:We got used to power up the welders as soon as the crew clocked in. It was just good practice to charge up the capicitors on my transformer machines. Those capacitors charge up and discharge upon surge at every arc strike. Then during off times, those capicitors are constantly charging unless you power off the machine. Hmmm, machinists are less flakey than weldors.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Originally Posted by Fusion1It doesn't "need" to be three phase to be a high performance machine. I am partial to the Miller Dynasty 300. I think they changed that to a 305. Anyway you can weld anything with that machine and even do some gouging if you really need to. It will run on 120, or 220 single or three phase. It has an auto link voltage detector in it so you can plug it into anything. I believe it will even work on 440. Anyway there are plenty of choices out there but this one is the best, as far as I am concerned. It isn't cheap either, but that would go with out saying wouldn't it?
Reply:I don't think you will be able to find anything you don't like about the Dynasty, very simply put the best machine I have ever used.Do yourself a favor and spend the next 2 months taking some time to learn the manual well, and how to access all of the hidden menus to be able to really dial the machine in like you want.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:bought the seventh synchrowave 300 that left the miller plant in the 70's. other than replacing 1 circuit board in all these years, (wore out 3 water-cooled torches, rebuilt the procon pump in the bernard water cooler) the unit has been bullet proof in constant day to day job shop use. the machine has not been babied, keeps on ticken!

Reply:Hey ExpatI was wandering... I see where you you are shipping too. Where from? Also, what are you going to do for warranty if needed? BTW I like your posts, working on big stuff looks fun.PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back
