needed 6 grade 8 bolts nuts and 12 washerssent my employee to ace hardware to get themcomes back and says they where $18.00is that crazy our what1/2x1.5 Attached Images
Reply:Couple weeks ago I needed some grade 8 hardware: six 5/8x1.5 bolts with nuts and eight 3/4" nuts only. Cost me $80 at NAPA, and that was after I pleaded for a better price than the original $92 they rang up for!
Reply:not trying tohijack, similar situation-- i sometimes have  use for  what is called tension bars for chain link fence..they are usually 3/16 x 5/8  by 6 feet long.. last time i found them in home depot they were $14 a piece..
Reply:Graded hardware is going beyond rediculous (spelling?) seems oxide coated grade 8 with cut washers in common sizes are almost double what we apid for the same stuff 18 months ago.  Some is even higher.  PVC is also headed into orbit.  Bought 1 1/4 t fittings last year for 47 cents, bought some yesterday for 2.12 a piece.  Dammmmmmm!BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:You guys need to find a local fastenal. Hell they even deliver to me for $5
Reply:McMaster Carr sells a similar 10 pack of bolts for $9, works out to about $1 each, plus the cost of nuts and washers.  Sometimes you can't wait for delivery, but if you can plan ahead it is often a lot cheaper to go with an online source.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:You guys need a good TSC near you. LAst time I bought grade 8s, I got two of the biggest bolts they had, something like (1 5/16") x 3", with washers and nuts, for like $8. I was happy with that.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:Much cheaper to go through Fastenal or McMaster Carr. I would look around for a fleet farm or fleet supply type store, the Big Box stores are definitely on glue for charging what they do for graded hardware. Those bolts should have been less than a buck each and nuts around $.60-.75 washer around a quarter each.
Reply:fmwfasteners.com sells bolts for about half of what Fastenal does. Plus they offer free shipping on orders over $25.I buy all my standard lengths of 1/2" bolts at tractor supply. They sell them by the pound. I was buying odd lengths like in half inch incriments at fastenal until I found fmw fasteners. they also take paypal which is good for me.

Reply:I have a fastenal store close by, but have not been able to buy anything from them yet.   And I have tried..lol.  Every time I go there for some bolts,. the size or style I need only is sold in bulk!! So if I need 2 bolts, they want me to buy 100.. I always have to say "No thanks" and go to lowes and pay their premium.  What is sad, I actually have a friend that works at fastenal, which is why I even try to buy from them...oh well.
Reply:This problem with getting graded bolts is because not enough people are buying them andthat is because all of the older generation that built things are gone. Many of the younger guys do not even know there are different grades of bolts available.Soon they will not even be available except by "special Order".I saw a tech thread the other day where a young guy was assembling truck spring leafswith low grade hardware store bolts. Many young men do not know what the markings on the head of a bolt mean.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:When I was in High School (mid to late 50's) my local industrial hardware man explained to me how I could not afford to buy fasteners in onesees and twosees.  When I went to college I learned about opportunity costs; that slow moving (hard to sell) bolt costs a lot to keep in inventory, and the customer who needs it will have to pay the rent on the shelf space and capital it took to have it in the store.  The big industrial hardware supply house sells a lot of bolts cheaper than the local guy who sells only a few from time to time.  But who is close by and open when you need the parts?I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Originally Posted by DHPmikethats the reason for bolt bins that you reorder when they get low. If you use bolts alot, but dont keep any in stock its your own dang fault when you have to buy them locally for a large price. I have no choice but to keep plenty in stock. When Im ready to ship a product I need them right then.
Reply:Another vote for TSC. I buy all my hardware there. Last was (6) grade 8 5/8X3 1/2 with 12 flat and 6 lock washers for $14 bucks. You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:Yep, TSC is open 7 days here in Texas. Im going to try out FMW fasters online as soon as I do inventory again. I just spent $56 at TSC then $120 at Fastenal the next day. I know I still need more so Im thinking see what the online store bolts are all about. Plus they take paypal and all my sales are paypal so its all good. as much stuff as I ship I cannot afford to run out. plus Im usually boxing stuff up at the end of the day anticipating dropping it of at UPS on the way home..Last edited by DHPmike; 06-04-2011 at 08:05 PM.Michael White
Reply:I recently needed about 50  3/8"-16 x 5" Carriage bolts, nuts and washers for a retaining wall. My local fastener store (Olander) didn't stock them in steel and I hadn't gotten around to checking/ordering earlier as I should have, so I went to a nearby (and disliked) Home Depot where they wanted about $1.69 apiece for the grade 5 zinc-washed steel bolts. Not even heavily-galvanized!  I went back to Olander and got them all in Stainless, the bolts $1.50 each, the washers $0.20 and the nuts $0.35 each. This is for a retaining wall with double-pressure-treated wood, so stainless was probably the best choice anyway.

Reply:Ed mac's purchase likely crossed that magic line where he probably could have bought more for less, by taking a whole box of each. But... I can certainly see the retailer's point in charging a premium for dolling out onesey twosey.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 06-05-2011 at 10:59 AM.
Reply:I will only go the a store to buy bolts is the sell them by the pound. I have been places that sell them by the part and that is crazy! I olny buy by the part if it is an emergency. I agree though Fastenal is a great place for buying hardware. They even will set a bolt bin up for you at your shop with what you want in it. Then if you want them to they will come as frequently as you want them to stock it for you. It costs a little extra but if you use alot of bolts it is nice and convient.KroekerMiller Trailblazer 302Miller Dial ArcMiller Suitcase 12RCVictor Torch

Reply:I have not tried them from fmw yet. I will though and I will test them at my shop. I have a test piece that I can put in a hydraulic press and see what strength they break at. its very non scientific but it works. The thing I may not have mentioned is this:I use stover (all steel) locknuts on all the products I sell. Nobody stocks these except Fastenal. Thats the reason I started going there in the first place. Plus the fact that they sell 9/16 bolts which I use alot.Michael WhiteThat's not such a bad price for what's there. Bolts, nuts and two washers each, plus sales tax. Or you can drive the extra miles (round trip) through the congestion to get to some big box store which might have what you want and shave three bucks off the deal. Be sure and send an "employee" to pick up six bolts. That's always cost effective. I gladly pay the extra costs for a 'local' hardware store simply to keep them local."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:K Surplus in National Ciity, a suburb of San Diego, has rows of bins of self service fasteners and other hardware, including abrasives.  Most of their stuff is sold by the pound. Reply:Whenever we get hardware at work, we generally get it either by the box or in larger quantities.  In the long run, unless it's an oddball size, it's generally more cost effective. The most common sized bolts I've seen on the job are 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4."
Reply:Alaska Industrial Hardware for me, unless I'm smart enough to need it before I need it RIGHT NOW, in which case I hit Fire and Fasteners in Anchorage. I've been riding that magic line, and I've redefined it at 'four'. If I need more than four bolts/washers/locks, I buy a box. Not that sane in the short term, but a man's gotta stock his shop somehow.(the only customer right now is me, so I'm not screwing anyone)
Reply:I use 2/8", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8" and 3/4" all in about 4 or 5 different lengths each plus flat washers and locknuts. I only use grade 8 for items I ship. I use grade 5 for jigs and fixtures in the shop. I usually buy the grade 5 at TSC and get $50 worth at a time. Pretty much all my jigs and fixtures use 1/2" x2" bolts.I ordered some FMW stuff the other night. we shall see how it works out..Michael White
Reply:yea dont buy bolts from regular retail outlets. 200-300% mark up... i use EBN Evansville bolt & nut or fastenal... i got 30 5/16x1inch buttonhead stainless bolts, nylok nuts and washers for like 15bucks the other day..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:Yeah, them prices are thru the roof.Yard sales and Surplus / Discount stores. Way of the future. Pixs are some of my most recent scores.Yard sales are best after he dies. She just "I don't know what it is, I Wants it out of here". I paid one thin quarter for the box of screws. Do you have more??? No but I got tools over there. Sad when you score that old American made stuff very well seasoned. His treasure in boxes. It's pretty dirty, will you take 50 cents for the whole box, I've got change. The bolts I paid $4 total for the tall can, $5 for the fat can. Surplus and we are going out of business, what will you pay?I also believe in the Just in Time system. A-yup, I got here just in time. You can't have too many bolts or hardware, best if you can find it when needed. I'm still working on that part, have been most of my life. Sorting, classification and separation. Now where did I put it?????? Attached Images
