Lincoln Ranger problem

Hi all.  Just registered but been lurking for quite some time.  I have a Lincoln,  actually a Red-D-Arc GX300,  and it quit welding on me today.  Has no arc what-so-ever.  Machine has been running great.  It has 675 hrs on it and is in great shape.    Anyway,  today the engine had idled down to low speed and I went to scratch start it to let it rev up and the rod stuck when I hit it.  The engine grunted for a second and I swear I heard what sounded like a squeak right in the front of the machine,  like a belt squeal.  Then the welder lost all power.  Now it does nothing.   It won't even actuate the high idle.Seems like it should be something simple,  any ideas?

Reply:Have you made sure that all the switches are settled into there exact position.  Not sure about the noises, but my GXT will do that something when I switch ranges or polarity, and the switch doesn't flip all the way into position.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Yeah,  I went through and flipped through all the ranges and tried it.  Played with the controls some and still nothing.
Reply:Hmmm, the manual says for no weld output:- make sure you have good conections on the cabling, especially the work/'ground' lead;- make sure switches are set properly, especially the "Weld Terminals" switch should be in the "Weld Terminals ON" position when not using a control cable;- bad PC board or weld alternator, which means you go to a "Lincoln authorized Field Service Facility".  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I took the sheet metal off and went over it checking for loose wires.  All seem to be tight,  I wiggled everything with the amperage down down with the leads jumped.  It never kicked the high idle in.   I cleaned the brushes and they look good.I'm hoping a tech or someone that knows a bit about these things may chime in with some diagnostic checks.  I looked all the net for a service manual but couldn't find any.  I was a mechanic before I was a welder,  I'm pretty sure I can fix it if I can find some direction on it.Thanks,  Ray
Reply:WooHoo!!  It's welding again!!!  Problem wasn't with the welder at all,  it was a burnt lead.  Feel silly for missing it in the first place but I'm glad it's fixed.
Reply:I'm still curious about the noise you heard; any chance it occurs occasionally but you don't normally notice it? I originally was thinking about a short 'overloading' the generator/alternator and putting a large load on the belt, causing it to slip.
Reply:I'm thinking the noise was from the lead finishing burning,  like a bad connection.  These leads are pretty old and they came off my 400.  They've been gouged with plenty and that's what actually burned them up.   I loaded the welder in the same way and I don't hear the squeal anymore.
Reply:Glad you got it working.  I was gonna mention that sometimes I will forget to switch it back to "Local", and it will do the same thing.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I have a GX271 I got out of Baton Rouge. You can download the manual from Lincoln using the K-code from your machine. You will need the code as there are 3 different manuals for the GX300.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
