ok guys, I need a little advice on this.. ive been welding pipe for some time now, 17 years. so I am hooking up a gas log to a meter skid and there are 5 welds total for the 8" and one 1" threadolet.im able to do 4 of the 5 8" welds roll out style the last weld in position. we have been getting some 45 degree fittings that have a ridiculous bevel on them, im not sure but I would guess it to be like 50 degrees, which I don't like but I thought it to be more of a waste of time trying to flatten them down and reface then just to fill in, all together im lookin at over an inch outside of bevel to outside of bevel. its taking me 5 passes to complete, 6010 in 8010 out. after I soak a fat bead in there I jump up to third gear and run 5mm all the way out. my problem is this, after my hot pass on my first fill pass its convex and with the huge bevel on the 45 fitting its leaving slag on the sides.. now ive got this 300 d cranked up to 90% of the 190 setting.. I would think this would be enough to pull the slag out of there but after digging around i ground down in there and found some trapped.. any suggestions on technique.. or heat..? man i would think im running plenty hot enough.
Reply:Get rid of the 5mm and run 3/16 70+ which won't fill quite as fast bit it is cleaner. If I go to stuffing 5mms in a weld I'll kick it into the 240range at about 80 for the hot filler. Usually those slag inclusions are from trying to carry too much iron, my advise is to either change rod or turn it up more and put in an extra pass or two
Reply:cool, thanx for the advice man. i was thinking i needed to weave it abit more instead of just laying a bead over the hot pass.. to me it seams that it makes to much of a sharp angle because of the first filler being proud and the huge bevels on these fittings, this foxcel 8010 im using to fill with stacks like crazy,  so maybe ill do like you said and try some different rod to fill with.. i got some pipeliner that will run a tad bit flatter than that foxcel but not much.. as far as the heat goes, ive never put that machine up any hotter than 3rd gear and 95 burning 5mm or 3/16..i always figured that was pleanty hot enough, maybe not... anyway its always good to hear from another pipe welder as to how they go about it...
Reply:I dont know if you are allowed to, But can you use split passes after your hot pass? On really wide bevels thats how I like to do it. But i just do water pipe. Up to .541 wall 42".
Reply:what do you mean? like stringers? i don't know... ive never heard that you couldn't...
Reply:Its just my personal preference to put my next passes into the sides of the bevel after the hot pass, then fill the center on wide bevels. Again thats just me. But an old pipeliner taught me that trick, he hated wide weaves.
Reply:thanx for the advice, ill have to try it, i don't think it would be an issue, its not a test and as long as its solid and there is no trash in there it will shoot..
