Hey guy I'm new here haven't had much time welding or anything but I'm learning slowly. Just wanted to know if any one can tell me if u can paint over zinc primer. Cold galvanizing I think it's call. LolI wanted to paint a gloss black over the zine primer.
Reply:In my experience you can paint over the cold galvanizing, but the paint does not stick very well. The zinc seems to be slick and powdery and the paint won't adhere well.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:When you say zinc primer, do you mean zinc chromate?  Is it green, yellow, grey, or black?  If so, zinc chromate is a standard primer for aviation top coating.  If it looks galvanized, disregard what I've said.
Reply:Thanks it's grey but it's more like a power grey instead of hot galvanized grey some one told me it's just a cold galvanizing gets spayed on  instead of hot diping itSent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk
Reply:Bit of etch primer over will fix the adhesion issues... which should be done over all bare metal surfaces including galv coated ****
Reply:Close to 20 years ago, I sandblasted, cold galvanized, Gloss Black spray bombed and varnished some wrought iron on wooden frame. Its still holding up quite well for its age outdoors.
Reply:The results are going to vary with each brand and type. 1st question to answer is are you specifically talking about zinc primer, the spray on zinc 'cold galv', or the liquid cold galv that gets brushed on?? Most of the spray cold galvs I'm familiar with are around 90+% zainc powder with a teeny bit of bonding agent, and do not specifically bill themselves out as 'primers'. Primer being the key word here. Paint is going to bond fairly well to any sprayed on zinc powder,,,, is the zinc bonded to the metal?? Reply:If he is using inorganic zinc such as Carboline CZ 11 , yes you can . If it is gavanized or metalized no.
Reply:No, paint doesn't stick well to cold galv. The zinc chromate primer is much better in terms of adhesion. Are you working on a galvanized part? If so, I would recommend that you don't paint it at all, galvanizing performs best when left alone.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:I think the question from the OP is very specific.  "Cold galvanizing" is the stuff out of a rattle can.  It's a high content of zinc, in a "primer" paint carrier.   The process is not nearly as good for protecting steel for long term corrosion as "hot dip galvanizing," but it does work well.  YES, you absolutely can paint over "cold galvanizing"  rattle can stuff.  It acts just like a primer coat.A Liberal is someone who lives in a gated community with private security,  but says that a boarder fence won't work and people don't need guns for self protection.
Reply:I paint over cold galvanizing compound with bright metallic silver regularly.  Helps the cold galv compounded areas match the undisturbed galvanized areas more closely.

Brush-on 95% zinc applies well; aerosol-can performance is acrap-shoot [like all rattle-cans].This is key: TOPCOATING: After 24-48 hours, ZRC [Zinc Rich Coating] may be topcoated with acrylic, chlorinated rubber, epoxy, urethane or vinyl type products. Reply:I've had decent luck painting over cold-galvanizing with ordinary exterior latex paint.  However, while the paint stuck just fine to the zinc, I do have to mention that the zinc itself didn't adhere terribly well to the steel underneath (despite a thorough cleaning and removal of scale).
