I'm a Tig welder been welding for about 20 yrs mostly aluminum, bronze, brass, steel ,Monel, titanium etc. currently working at machine shop they want me to stick some material I've never heard of called 17-4 ph they machine parts for pumps so they want me to weld a part called I think valve stem cause they currently sub it out some were else any information on how to weld this from start to finish cause I don't really stick weld
Reply:I know 17-4 is a very hard grade of stainless.  I have used it before to make hydraulic cylinder rods for offshore applications.  Not sure about the stick welding process for it though, we always mig welded it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:17-4 stainless steel is a precipitation hardening stainless steel. Your machine shop machined it so it is still in the normalized state(soft). The correct tig filler is ER630 and you can certainly tig weld it. If one component is already hardened you can preheat the assembly before welding depending on thickness. If it a thick section it may require stress relief no matter what process you use to weld it.I tig a lot of 17-4 and some years ago I held a Mil-W-2219 qualification for it. For the life of me I don't know where they came up with the idea to stick weld it.Good luck.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
