Hi newb, here. I have an old SA 200, rebuilt, restored, and used for a backup to my classic 300. question is, why does my oil bath cup eventually fill up "has to be gas" ? I close fuel valve @ bowl before shutting down, so it has to be filling up while running. anybody been through this? I cant understand this, choke is open.  Tanks in advance.

Reply:Fuel dribbling from the carb's needle and seat?I've seen engines with a bad intake valve "back spraying" but then they certainly don't run well. Start by pulling the plugs and looking for signs of rich running (black insulators) and notice if the problem is isolated to one cylinder or uniform between cylinders. Good Luck

Reply:This is a common issue old tractors as well.  By chance, does it have the Marvel Schebler or the Zenith?  Old marvels are quite prone to a post nasal drip issue so to speak.Usually, it is from too much fuel pressure from the gravity fed tank forcing the needle if ever so slighty of the seat, allowing more gas into the carburetor until it "flood" over and into the intake chamber.  A rebuild of the carb or a changeover to a Zenith should help.  Also as mentioned, cut off the fuel when you are not using it.  A shut off fuel line can't leak into the carb.  If it will be in storage for a while, close the tank valve and allow it to run and consume most of the fuel and shut it down when it begins to run out of fuel. After rereading your post, I see you feel it is happening during running. A simple rebuild may be all you need. Pay particular close attention to the tang on the float and use the gauge provided with the rebuild kit to bring the float into proper position when closed.  This is usually the cause for a flooding carb.    If you have had a carb replacement,  there is a chance that this carb may have a "power" valve at the bottom side of the carb that has an adjustable T handle. When out of adjustment,  this valve can cause the same problem by running over rich particularly on idle ups and loaded conditions.]Additionally, take your intake hose off for a few days and set a cup under it to see if it drips. Indeed, you could have a faulty valve on your fuel sediment bowl.  Leave this hose off too as you run the engine in a clean environment for a while and see if fuel is dripping while it is running.  That is the only way to tell which it is.Last edited by lugweld; 01-21-2009 at 09:37 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Yes , engine always ran a little rich, First time I`ve heard the term of backspraying. But it must be ,cause oil cup fills with fuel, but never higher than top of cup. Engine was totally rebuilt, but carb has not. Engine has always run good, idler does`nt work , so it runs high idle. I fashioned a pullrod and lockoff to idle it down manually from control panel. I always idle it down and let idle for a while and shut off fuel beore I kill it. It has progressively gotten worse " an ocasional popping" I`m guessing valve seat issues. I guess time to reset lash. Sooo- can this condition, cause fuel in oil prob. or is it a carb issue? stuck float etc. thanks for responding
Reply:Thanks guys, now I`m agreeing with leaking needle valve. In retrospect, I think I remember, taking loose the line beond bowl and it dripped. I guess all those little drips add up eh? good advise fellas Thanks
Reply:Well, it`s been about 3 weeks since I used this welder, checked the filter cup and no fuel. apparently fuel bowl valve is holding. It was the 300 that had a drip, beyond the valve. So- evidently it fills under load or while running. plugs always had a little black soot, but brush clean with a few swipes. Never had them wear as in too hot. Brush off soot and they look new. Carb is the Marvel Schebler. always had a little weep at needle valve, but more of a stain, than a leak. I guess I`ll try rebuilding carb, making sure the float is doing its job, and inform of results. thanks again

Reply:possibly, I think I`ll take it off and flush with gas or laquere thinner. It`s never been done, while in my possesion. did`nt recall reading as part of maintainence program. would`nt that be something if that cured the problem!
Reply:sounds like a bad needle and seat ,or it could be the flaot has a hole in it , have seen this a few times
