after giving up on getting the water cooler going i bought a weldmark air cooled tig rig. it's rated for 150 amps but get's hot well below rated capacity. the plastic gas hose gets soft when heated and pulls away from the ferrule on the fitting and after fooling with it a few times i cut it back an inch or so then reconnected it and it seems to be holding. i found some stainless and regular steel filler rods that have been laying around the shop long before i got there. next trip to the lws i'm getting some new filler rod.
