lincoln weldan power 225 charging

Hello, I am new here, a greatsight for welding info. I recently picked up a lincoln weldanpower 225 AC/DC welder with the onan twin engine, it needed a littlle TLC but seems to be running pretty good, I have a question though, the charging system is putting out a good charge but when running and the battery is disconected the unit shuts down, is this normal or should it be like a car that can run without a battery connected, thanxs in advance for any fedback..Bob
Reply:I have one of those.  If it works, don't mess with it.  It charges at a fixed rate.  Put a volt meter on the battery and see just exactly what it is charging at.  It should be at least 13.7 volts running on high speed.  It may not put out enough on idle to keep up.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:thanxu for the info..i put a volt meter across the battery and from not running it is 12 volts and almost 14 when at high idle..Bob

Reply:yes it still dies, it might just work that way, i have a new generac generator that wont run without a battery connected but also gives a proper charge..probably some engineer thought this up just to cause aggravation..LOL...Bob

Reply:That machine only puts out a limited # of amps.  Not much at all at idle and a max of 10 at high idle.  Not much of a regulator, but it doesn't need it because it spends most of its time welding (high idle).If it aint broke, keep fixing it till it is David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:If that machine has coils powered by the battery then unhooking the battery will result in a stalled motor. The japs use this system on several of their motorcycle and it works well. If an engine quit for no reason the first thing we would check is batt connection. There shouldn't be any reason to unhook the battery when the engine is running anyways.
Reply:yes the current knob is set at 10 max, I only played around with the battery disconnecting because it came with a dead battery and I was just curiouse to see if the engine would run without the battery I put a good battery on and during use it will stay connected, and yes there is a coil with points..
