Hello Fellow Sparkies...I am not a UNION labor or mgt.  Just a guy with head down and stinger sparking.I KNOW THAT MOST/ALL  BS stories start with "Youre ain't going to believe this"  and then goes downhill. Here is the setup:   THe owner of the company, A VERY smart man that I have a lot of respect for him.  He has a company that make a rock breaker.  THink a log splitter for rocks on a small trailer. The blade is powered a 2cyl gas engine that drives a hydrolic tank that feeds the lever arms.  High but not two high of presures.  THe entire unit really works well.He hires a well experienced welder based on recommendations from the Union guys and etc etc. He came into the shop and the boss sets up a mig test for him. He asked good questions and  did a good job on his test pieces and the  boss hires him. After lunch, purchased by the boss, we all went to our benches and worked the balance of the day. The boss laid all of the parts of the unit onto the welding table. Gives a good luck and see you later....Time passes..One the 2nd day, the boss went over and looked over the new welders work. All of the pieces that the boss laid out on the table had been welded  onto the welding table just where the boss had left them!! THe welds were first class on each piece and had a great "mound of dimes look".  THe boss went over and asked the guy, who was his 3rd break of the morning, to explain why he did it that way.New Welder :  In all of my jobs, they have people that put the things I am to weld in a certain place and I then weld them all up.Boss:  Why did you not mover them so they would look like the others ??New Welder:  Oh that's some other persons work...I am just the welder. He did not bring his lunch the next day.I saw this with my own eyes. This is what went on.What are your thoughts...good or bad or ???If I was Boss...bounce bounce and don't let the doorknob hit you in the butt on the way oy my shop..and do not darken my door step.WWoW
Reply:Sounds like someone that takes orders well...Has his sh!t together as far as the welding dept goes....But has no common sense at all....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:A good welder is not only a welder, she/he needs to realize that.
Reply:I believe it, back in high school I had a friend that was super book smart but couldn't do the most simple common sense tasks...seems to be a common issue with many people, either they are smart in reading about it but have no idea how to do it in reality..or what the obvious should be...too funny...the boss should set him up on exactly what to do and go get him for any questions before he welds..it would be a shame to waste the talent( welding part), and try to find his niche in the work field...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:It always amazes me how lazy welders can be. And not give a sh!t. This job here on the Seattle water front. Every weld was 100% UT. Numerous times I had state certified welders walk away from a joint with holes in the weld the size of your little finger nail.I fired 12-welders on this project. Reply:Never had the luxury, I might like it. Were I the boss, this guy would be gone.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Be careful what you say, sounds like he's management material or inspector.

Reply:Well... I guess that's what happens when you hire a WELDER and not a FABRICATOR! I always thought that even if you are specialized in a single task, you should know a little about the tasks involved arround yours... just to make sure the final goal is achieved. Even if you cannot fix it, at least you should be able to notice that someting is not OK and report it to whoever is in charge.
Reply:It's at least half management's problem since no one looked in on him for a day. How can you let a new guy go that long without at least checking on them? Reply:In my boat refit project, I've had plenty of mechanics, woodworkers, bodywork, painters, and welders do certain jobs along the way. It's been my experience that the vast majority require close supervision (i.e. check in every 15 minutes). There have been times where I've explained the general concept that I'm trying to accomplish and the $100/hr pro gets it 90% there then screws up on the last 10% so badly that I've got to cut out his work and redo it myself. It pisses me off every time, but I have to take some of the blame for not assuming that the pros can be morons who need every step and detail explained to them and even then they need constant babysitting to make sure they don't come up with their own "better way" of doing something. If the owner in this case didn't tell the new welder to assemble the parts, the welder's one of those morons that needs babysitting, but it's pretty much on the owner.1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 RefitMiller TB280 w/Spoolmatic 30a2016 AHP AlphaTIG 200XAncient Millermatic 35Zeny Cut50 plasma cutter

Reply:LOL! We HAD one here 2 weeks ago! Running Flux-Core, he wouldn't chip his own welds! He lasted a week being told HE HAD to do it! 2nd week, he didn't come back. Kept complaining that was his "helpers" job.

Reply:My brother called me one day telling me he had a friend that was a welder and they wanted to weld some angle iron for a foot bridge out at their pond.  They had an A/C welder borrowed from someone else and wanted to know what kind of welding electrodes to purchase for the task.  Come to find out the welder buddy was fresh out of trade school and only knew how to TIG weld pipe.  He had never used an arc welder with electrodes and had never welded anything that wasn't round.   Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPI got sent to California to over see the welding of this 1-mile pipe tray. It took at least 12-man hours before I got an ounce of production. 8-hour safety class, then weld tests. First morning I explained how it was going to work, and what I expected out of the welders. I let them go for the first 8-hour shift. Early the next morning I went out to see how they did. Horrible! When the crew started I informed them that Chevron’s welding inspectors would not accept any of the welds they put in. I had them arc everything out, and grind clean. The next day I let them go the whole shift with out checking on them. Next day I went out early to check on their welds. When the crew showed up for work, I fired the whole crew! I ended up with pipe welders doing the rest of the welding. I don’t believe in nurse maiding journeyman / certified welders. When working for me, do your job, or I’ll have a new crew in the morning!
Reply:I saw a whole movie set get shut down one day. An extension cord came unplugged. They didn't have an "approved" electrician on site to hook it back up.. Movie stuff is ALL union
Reply:If I had enough skills as a welder to do that and possibly make a little more than average  wages, chipping My welds would be easy peasy. I keep plugging away but I think I am one of those that is going to take 10 years seat time. I'll get there eventually.

Reply:One of the most likable, hardest working men I know is ruled by feelings of vindictiveness.  The smallest infraction or injustice stick's in his mind waiting for opertunity to react, sometimes months later. Interestingly, once he get's the lick in he never carries any ill feelings foward.  With all his outstanding atrabutes,if he lost that single fault he would spirial to the top of anything he became involved with. As it stands people will not trust him knowing sooner or later he will embarrass them. Welding those parts to the table is the type thing he would do knowing full well it would cost his job.
Reply:This is why I no longer hire anybody for anything, except for roofing (I've found a good roofer, and he can complete jobs in a fraction of the time I can since he's been doing the work full-time for years and he knows the tricks of the trade.)  I spend WAY too much time keeping up with repairs and maintenance, but at least I know that things are done right and I won't have to deal with them again any time soon...  some of my worst experiences have been at (supposedly) "good" autobody shops.  I don't think that it's unreasonable to expect a finish without fisheyes or large dust specks in it, or sanding scratches underneath (if I can do it, then the pros should be able to as well).
