Hey y'all. I'm in the process of procuring some new lenses for my pipeliner hood, and I need some advice. My AD hood is the Jackson Balder BH3, and I love it. It's comfortable, the color comes out as a nice bluish hue, it's all around just a great hood. And for this reason, I'd rather not see it destroyed welding pipe. So I'm breaking out the trusty Fibre-Metal hood. My problem with it is that I cannot stand the vivid green color of the arc. I've been doing some research, and it seems as though a gold glass lens, backed by a blue drop in lens, will be my best option. So the question remains, which one? I was all set to buy the product offerings from Phillips Safety, until I read some not so glowing reviews of their blue lens online. AO is out of the question because, quite simply, I can't afford to drop $300+ on a lens. Surely there must be other quality options out there. I don't like the Ebay offerings because they're bonded, I'd rather have two separate lenses.Thoughts?
Reply:I buy old blue wrapped Lincoln supervisability lenses or run a small EQC auto with variable shade. Reply:I bought my aulketro lens with an extreme blue drop in, amazing color.
Reply:I’m fairly new to welding. The color of the puddle means nothing to me. I just want a clear view of whats going on.I really like the ArcOne auto lenses. Reply:If I'm burning rods I'll use my gold lens, anything else I'm with CEP. I switch alot between mine.
Reply:I'm also with CEP. I think the Arcone lenses are the best value in ADF filters. Excellent clarity at a very excellent price.
Reply:Thanks for the input. However, I suppose I should've specified, I'm not after another AD hood. I just want a passive lens in this one. I heard that the gold lenses provide somewhat of a blue tint as well. I'm going to start with that, and then I'll look into a blue drop in lens if needed.Anybody have an opinion on the gold lenses offered by Phillips Safety?

Reply:I really like a shade 10 gold lense. After using this I actually prefer my pipeliner over my BH3, seems to be a much clearer view IMO.
Reply:The Wens lens is blue.
Reply:@TimmyTig - I looked at Wenslens, and they're appealing, but I'm not sure I'm ready to drop that kind of cash on a lens that I've never tried before. Definitely on my radar though.@CEP and hicktown - What kind of color does the gold lens by itself provide?
Reply:We had a guy at work bought one and let me try it, I didn't like it. I used the Super Visibility until I switched over to my Speedglas fresh air hood recently.
Reply:@ Russ Walker - "best" is always subjected to the eye of the beholder.  Recommend you try a $20 Gold, fixed-shade, glass (not plastic) in #s 10/11 by Philiips Safety Products. All my Pipeliner lids ever accept for SMAW, MIG, and TIG work."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:I like the arc one drop in. Works pretty good. I also like the blue tinted lenses. Everyone's eyes are different so everyone has their preferences.
Reply:Welcome to the forum. What shade are you looking for? There is a vendor on ebay that sells the 1 piece Aulektro in shades 8 through 13.
Reply:I have Aulektro lens in shades 9-12 with the extreme blue drop in....about half the price the "others" that glue them together charge
Reply:1/3 the price of Wens lens Attached Images

Reply:one of the guys as work just got a super cheapo Anchor Brand gold lens ... i used it a bit today and really liked it.  most white / clear with just a tiny blue hue.  I think its time i hang up my (3) ADF hoods and go back to the passive lenses.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:Someone here once suggested the inexpensive Hobart gold #10 lense.  I dropped one into my Pipeliner and haven't looked back.  It's clear and works great.  If I'm running a rod bigger than 1/8, or am welding with higher amps (around 140+)  with 1/8, I simply wear a pair of safety "sun glasses" under the hood in lieu of the clear safety glasses.  Works like a champ and doesn't break the bank.  You can find those lenses at tractor supply for around $7.00.  I'd try that first, because you might like it and it's nothing lost if you don't.A Liberal is someone who lives in a gated community with private security,  but says that a boarder fence won't work and people don't need guns for self protection.I highly recommend the green glass, gold plated lens ($20) from Phillips Safety.   I'd been using the cheaper (around $7) green plastic, gold coated ones (TriMark brand) that the LWS carries but find the Phillips much better and worth the extra $13.   I've let several of my coworkers who use AD hoods try it and so far all of them think it's an improvement.  Phillips is having a 20% off sale thru Oct. 31.   Use code HALLOWEEN20 at check out.

Reply:@russ walker It is hard describe, but it is a clarity similar to the balder helmet, to me it looks like you would expect the arc to without a hood on just alot dimmer obviously. Maybe a bit of a gold tint, but I tend to see mostly black (backround as most lenses seem to be) and the redish orange glow, not flash or brightness of the molten metal with a clear image of the arc. The shade 10 is perfect for me, allowing me to clearly see the metal, arc, and weld puddle all clearly with no eye fatigue after a few straight hours of welding.hope that helps, but i'm struggling to accurately describe what has become a "second nature" view for me.Last edited by hicktown; 11-01-2015 at 08:07 PM.
Reply:@KineticI use a shade 12 also.   Have been wanting to try their "Supper Blue" drop in behind one of them to see what difference it makes but dam man, $49 for a piece of blue polycarbonate?   http://www.phillips-safety.com/weldi...d-sfp-wfs.html
Reply:Best $10 you'll ever spend. Somewhat "clear", so much that the smoke is distracting with stick, but great for tig.
