A salesman my company deals with on a regular basis stops in and tells me he knows a company that will take GMAW gun tips and nozzles and freeze them... This company claims that by freezing the copper tips and nozzles the grain structure tightens up and increases the life span of the tips and nozzles... I have never heard of anything like this. They offered to freeze some of our tips for free to check out, so I said sure what the heck.I have my thoughts and opinions already, but will look at this experiment with an open mind...What are everybodies thoughts?

Reply:One of the other fellas already mentioned cryogenic treatment, it is often used for weapon parts, barrels specifically most often, and it does result in stronger and more accurate barrels. I am sure that other metallic objects could benefit from this. Likely a bit cost prohibitive though. I'll be interested to see if you actually see a benefit from this. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I get into this discussion around cryo treating barrels all the time. There is a community of guys that just love the mini-14 platform and hate the AR platform. They are constantly espousing the benefits of doing this to their guns. The thing is, it is a complete waste of money, at least when it comes to guns. From Shilen Should I "cryo" my barrel? If you have heard that the cryogenic treatment stress relieves steel, this is false. We have measured the residual stress in 4140 and 416 steel with a process called x-ray diffraction. After much R&D, we have not been able to measure any changes in molecular stress after cryo treatment. For this reason we do not endorse the cryogenic process, but we can safely say that it is not detrimental to the barrel either.

Reply:Cyro is a waste?I just heard a comment from a Metallurgist Engineer last week that it is done quite often on parts for Nuclear Reactors.I have read alot of OLDER articles before the Internet existed on the subject of Rifle Barrels being done, back then most thought it helped. In my old Hi-Power days at Camp Perry, we were using Garands and M-14's with a few 03-a3's, M16 platforms were a Novelty for close range shooting. I was done shooting by the time heavier Bullets and Fast Twist Barrels came out, but I know they are performers now!On the subject of the Salesman trying to "Sell" you on this, tell him you want to try some samples to see if they indeed last longer.Always Good to get Freebies!
Reply:Works on gear sets and axle shafts. I don't think it would work on copper parts, the big problem there isn't wear or strength it's heat and spatter. I've never worn out a mig tip but I sure have melted a few or stuck the wire so bad in the tip that I just cut it off and put a new one on.
Reply:My thoughts from the beginning was that this was a bunch of baloney, but the company was willing to freeze a bunch of our consumables for free, so sure what the hell I will give it a try. We should be recieving the consumables back soon. I will look at this with an open mind, but I will be shocked it if does work.
