Picked this up for $80 just a couple miles from home...   perfect for what I want to do... Reply:agreed ^.Its a nice tool with a compund slide table though. I dont know if I would "mill" with it. If I did it would be very light cuts. Reply:It might work for what southpaw wants - with endmill holder and draw bar.  The chuck will come out and jack up you work. If our table does not move easily, then it will be very unpleasant making passes.  Like much of HF stuff it the tool can become a hobby just making it function properly.. Check yahoo groups for info.Worth 80 bucks, though.

Reply:Hey guys,If you don't HAVE one, or never USED one, please refrain from spouting your baseless comments regarding that mill/drill. Opinions you are entitled to, although, are meaningless without a "hands-on" experience.I have a similar mill that I got, new in the crate, shipped without any damage for less than $180 & has performed flawlessly & with great accuracy & has done every type of milling I need. The proper application of usage & material has to be understood regarding mill feeds/speeds/amount of material cutting to obtain desired results. Same as a welder.....amps, material thickness, type of metal...... simple, eh? You use it with the understanding of limitations. I see that it is a 1/2HP unit & mine is a 3/4HP, so I believe it will do as well as mine.southpaw:  Get a good Jacobs chuck as I did & that will eliminate the weak/soft import-made chucks that wear out fast. As long as you take your time with steady feeds & material(steel) cuts <.125, it will serve you well. A mill is a superb unit to do some machining/fabrication that many need on occasion & when space is premium & can be a limitation for a large mill such as a Bridgeport, these bench mills can fill a need. These units will mill aluminum, brass/copper, & the softer material quite handily with excellent results & precision. Don't underestimate them.....    Here's some pics of some of my projects milling & the monthly milling I do on the doorframes(latch slot) I make for my old boss's contracts he still gets. Reply:Yorkie:I can't figure out from your pics if you are milling with the EM in a collet or a drill chuck. The close ups look like a collet but your first pic looks like an EM in the chuck.

Reply:Hey dune,That is a Lewis chuck, one of several I had when I had my Bridgeport as I've seen the weakness of most of the flimsier imported chucks. It has never had an EM come loose. Reply:Hey Rick,Yeah, they're expensive today. When I bought my Bridgeport back in '74($500), the 'ol timer I got it from gave me every attachment/accessory he had with it. There were (5) Lewis chucks along with a couple Jacobs & a complete collet setup. When I sold the Bridgeport, I kept all the accessories. Yup.......came in handy.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab.
