i was thinking about buying a  new inverter welder, and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on one or the other.  need to weld aluminum stainless and mild steel.
Reply:I'm not to sure either of these are inverter based in the truest sense of the term.    The 350 MP is certainly an advanced welder, probably the most advanced all in one MIG welder on the market, but what is inside there is another question.    Both wleders are heavy with the Miller somewhat lighter, niether is light enough to lead one to believe they are inverter based.Niether manufacture goes into any great depth as to how these units function in their sales literature.   You might want to inquire directly with a dealler or the factories.    ThanksDave
Reply:I would imagine the Lincoln is an inverter.  The Miller definitely is; it's an XMT inverter made into a Millermatic.  Its power draw is less than the Millermatic 251's and it weighs less, too.
Reply:To the best of my knowledge, the Lincoln 350 MP uses a conventional laminated iron transformer, the output of which is filtered, then controlled by IGBTs.  The IGBT “Chopper module” is very similar to the ones used on Lincoln’s high-end “Chopper technology” engine welders. The control system on the 350 MP has very advanced MIG features and I hear it also does a nice job with stick and Touch-Start TIG. (DC Only)
Reply:Hi MacThe Miller may very well be inverter based, one give away is single or three phase input.   It does seem like Miller is affraid to speak out about the technology in the machine, as no mention is made at all about the machine being inverter based in the 2006 catalog.I try not to dwell to much on the top end welders, they are a bit out of reach at the moment.    Also at 180 poinds it is not exactly portable either.Dave
Reply:The Lincoln has CC output for Stick and TIG welding also, doesn't it?
Reply:Hi Mac,I just checked the Lincoln web site.   http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...et.asp?p=18685It does indeed do CC (Stick) and touch start (DC only) TIG

Reply:I wonder just how big a seller that really is, though.  Anybody with the budget/needs for a 350A MIG, probably has enough business that they wouldn't really want/need the multiprocess capabilities.I know I certainly prefer separate machines and keep them ready for their respective processes.
Reply:I have mine set up with the spool gun, stick stinger, tig torch, and steel in the wire feeder, and all I have to do is flip one switch, grab the appropriate tool, and weld........... gravy...  easy gravy. very tasty easy gravy. I mean it's BETTER than cooking with crisco!  BUTTER flavored Crisco....OK, now I'm just rambling!............ sorryWe need to protect Freedom of Speech, otherwise, how would we know who the A-holes (like me) are.
Reply:It's a very good machine with a decent dc tig arc. It's nice to have a machine that is muti-process, ifit costs as much as one the does one thing only. The Powermig 300/350 is a deal and has someinteresting stainless programs that the MM- 350p doesnot have. I had mine down to about 30 second changeover from standard mig to stick/ tig. It took longer to unwrapthe cables then change processes. The MM-350p is also a fine unit in it's own right.I will take one of each.

Reply:The Millermatic 350P is definitely an inverter.   It is, for all practical purposes, an XMT 304 CV with integrated pulse and an XR push-pull wire feeder, all in one box with a cart under it.I would never end up using all the multi process features of the Powermig 350MP in the shop cause I already have so many machines that are all ready set up to do what each one does best.   Where a multi process machine shines is in mobile work, but the 350MP doesn't lend itself well to use on a welding truck.  I am now getting the XMT set up for multi process mobile work.  It will  be doing dc stick, dc tig, mig on steel and aluminum and fluxcore.   It is an excellent stick welder.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
