I know this may be a really dumb question to some of you. But I gotta ask, before I go buy a $3500 welder/generator. Is there ANY way a SA200 can be made to put out 110 AC voltage to power my home etc... Is there a 'kit' to do so? I know some say they have a kit or something to make 3 phase stuff run on 220, so can they flip DC to AC somehow too? Also, is there anyway that a SA200 could be made run a plasma cutter?? I think those only work on house current or do they?  Im sure this is a 'dumb-as-hell' question to some of you, but I gotta ask it if Im ever gonna know. Thankyou-The first step to having everything you want is to want everything you have.
Reply:I don't think its possible.  Its a true DC generator.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I don't think it's practical.  I'm sure you could buy an inverter that would convert the ~120V DC output from the SA200 to ~120V AC output.  But you'd pay a small fortune for the inverter, and it wouldn't make enough AC power to run much more than small power tools.  Plasma cutters will likely need too much current. If you have $3500 to spend, and you need enough juice to run a plasma, look for a bargain fixerupper 300D or a used gas drive unit.  Used Bobcats or trailblazer or Rangers are in that price range, and they will supply AC aux power in a large enough amperage to run a plasma.Just my opinion...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:as much stuff as there is out there now for gagets there is some sort of conversion but the key is is it practicalI was told there was a conversion out there at least ten yrs ago when I looked into it but it was 2500.00 so I didnt look any further, stumpfs welding supply has a enormious supply of pipeliner parts and parts machines they would be a good start and so would bills engine driven welders to answer you question , and there is now such thing as a dum question thats why we ask .
Reply:There is a guy out in Norman OK,  that when you send your machine to him to be reworked, he adds an ac inverter...Its not cheap though...and it has some serious wattage.   Here's his website with pictures....  http://lincolnbobekin.com/CONTACT.htmlEsab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:A rough gauge for inverter pricing and sizing used to be about a dollar a watt. Technology has improved a lot but I don't think the relative costing has changed much. Talking middle of the road quality here, not your knock-off predator products that seem to be flourishing lately.
Reply:Anything can be done. How much do you want to pay?You can run a DC motor and put a pulley on it, and have it run a belt driven AC generator. You can install an inverter like LINCOLNBOBEKIN did. Nice job by the way. I have a set of batteries running a 3-phase 208V inverter. The inverter is connected to a rectifier and charges the batteries when commercial power is on. When commercial power fails the batteries run the inverter. So you could do what you want to, but do you want to?Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:It can't be pulling too much power...It only is using a single belt.  I would suspect because of that it pulls less than 12-13 hp.  According to a mechanical engineer I talked with about my sawmills, a single belt design can only transmit about 12-13 hp.  It could be wrong, but after checking with others designs, it is about right.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Right about the belt Lugweld.I think the pictured unit is 5kva @ 3600, or about 20 amps @ 240v.That may not be exactly what Helrzr1 would use, but my point was to show a practical workable solution.Good Luck
Reply:He COULD use that and do away with his alternator/generator and install a transformer/inverter and a rectifier and charge his battery.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Actually Lugweld that's sort of what I was thinking, because the SA-200 doesn't need much of a charging system. He could remove the 12v generator, and use the original belt drive and mounting space to locate an AC unit. He could then fit an on board charger to keep the starting battery charged.
Reply:WOW! That is alot of ideas' and knowledge there. I am impressed, and Im thinkin about doin away with the alternator. The two truck batteries are wired in to the battery on the welder. Dad did that for those 'frosty' cold -20 degree days when the lincoln didnt really wanna start. So, the alternator on the welder doesnt really matter. I think it would take a long long time for the lincoln to run down 2 1000 amps and 1 700 amp battery. That is a pretty good idea. I had been lookin at the Lincoln 250's and 305's and such to put on as a secondary machine, that way I could run tig, (which Ive been practicing at a friends' shop) as well as do plasma cutting etc.. they are just so darned expensive. Im not sure I would use it enuff to justify the cash spent. Then I would have it all on one truck. I saw a truck or two like that on the 'show your rides' thread. The first step to having everything you want is to want everything you have.
Reply:On old farm tractors a common practice was to make the connection at the crank where the hand crank fits.  My tractor has a shaft and coupling driving an add-on hydraulic pump at that location.Might be easier and stronger than a belt drive.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:That would be a good idea IF the power generator could run at 1:1 ratio to the engine.  But not much chance on a SA200.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:I would just carry a seperate portable generator.   You can find lightly used 5000 watt generators on Craig's List all the time for $300 to $500.   5000 watts at 220 volts is about 25 amps or so, enough to run most of the smaller plasmas like Miller 375 or Hypertherm 380.   Use that together with a gas powered air compressor and you'd be set, for not alot of money or hassle.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:I don't have any idea how many amps a plasma  cutter uses, but they have some on eBay right now.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=220373751281Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
