Lincoln V155S vs Miller Maxstar 150

Choosing a first welder and am considering the V-155S or the Maxstar 150.  We moved out to the country from the city and I want to learn to weld and do some of chores that need done around around by myself.  Chores include welding back some broken hinges in the horse barn, repairing a broken gate and finishing the pipe fence around the back of the house.  I'm a carpenter and have also thought about adding metal work to some the wood furniture that I build.  All of my welding would be outside or behind the wood shop.I like these welders because they are small and could store easily in the shop when not in use, and don't have to mess with bottles and gas.  The Lincoln model is advertised as being useful with a 200 foot extension cord.  The pipe fence line is 150 to 200 from the back of the house and that would be a major project.  Anyone with experience using these welders with an extension cord of that length?Rank Beginner
Reply:ive used them both, and i just bought the lincoln last week. both are wonderful, but id have to say that i like the lhe lincoln better. its definitely more handsome.......only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:I've had a max150 for about 5 years. At the time, Lincoln didn't have anything that compared. Now they do, but it wouldn't be a tough choice for me to go with the Max again. There are several reasons why, but the key one is the lower current draw. It makes a big difference at the end of a long line, especially at 120V.The arc characteristics are similar, based on my very limited exposure to the Lincoln. The size and weight are comparable, with similar accessories. The Lincoln is a bit less expensive. The top end currents are basically the same (the 5 amp difference doesn't show in use). I do a lot of TIG, and the TIG start on the Miller is nicer, in my opinion. May never matter to you. I prefer the stick start of the Miller, as well. My preference may be due to familiarity, but there is a very distinct difference.Lincoln did a good job in the end, but, to me, the maxstar is a better machine in the conditions I work in.
