I have a small sawmill and want a trailer dedicated for log hauling. nothing huge or elaborate. the longest log I can saw is 9 feet. so would a 6x10 or 7x10 made from 6x6x5/16 angle and 4 inch channel cross members and a 1k brake axle be sufficient? I would most likely do a true 2x6 floor on it where the wood is a true 2x6 sense I have a mill.Zach WareOwnerMid-GA Outdoor & Equipment ServiceByron GA478-960-2014
Reply:isn't a 1k axle a wee bit lite for a 9' log?I image one you would be carrying more than one log, no?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:The trailer sizes are good choices, but angle is an expensive material to use for the frame since it caries less weight/pound than chanel or tube. If you only care about the lowest floor posible then it's an ok choice. 4" channel would be great for that length trailer and be lighter. For that size trailer 3" channel is enough for the crossmembers too. And I agree that a 1k axle will barely haul the trailer you are talking about building, for not much more you can go 3500lb and have a good useful trailer.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:I agree with them . I have Made a couple with 4" channel even for the cross channel although 3" would work fine. Put a 3,00-3,500 lb axel otherwise you will be disappointed .
Reply:it was a typing error. I meant 7kZach WareOwnerMid-GA Outdoor & Equipment ServiceByron GA478-960-2014
Reply:A single 7k or tandem 3500s? The channel would be ok either way, I'm just curious. Will the tires be outside the frame or under? Also you planning on sides? You can save a lot of weight and cost if you put sides on it. I think this one was 80"x12' with a 7k axle.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:You might get in touch with member Brendonv as he has a trailer very much like I think you want to build. Maybe he can do some measuring of his for you.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...g-Trailer-Mods.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've owned a lot of trailers, and I've abused a lot of trailers. I am a big fan of trailers as they offer a magnum amount of versatility at a comparative micro cost. I started with twin axle 3,500lb units and about 2 minuets later discovered how easy it was to put 10k on one. Please note that I did not say safely on one. A 7k rated trailer, less 1,500 lbs of trailer, is 5,500lbs of load. It won't take long to get that much wood on one. My standard trailer now is 7 x 20 with 14k worth of axles, current count 4 units, trailer weight 2k, load capacity 10k, brakes on both axles. Get a trailer that fits your current and future needs now. Buy once and cry once. I have a full blown fabricating facility and frankly, I can't figure out how these guys figure that they can build a trailer cheaper than they can buy one, and I don't care if they stole the material. I purchase a good used 7x20 with 14k axles for $2,500, pack the bearings, check the brakes and go. I know I couldn't steal the material and build the trailer for that. Good luck with your search.I forgot to add that you're tow vehicle needs to be able to handle the trailer and it's load. You can pull a 14k trailer with a 1/2 ton but not fully loaded. I would get the 14k trailer if I even remotely thought I was going to grow into it.Last edited by gundog77; 11-10-2015 at 04:46 PM.
Reply:Nobody only hauls 1 nine foot log! Two or three out of someone's yard is the norm. In the woods, you'll want to load it all so you can go home!Make that mill handle 10 or 12 feet as you'll always have people asking for longer boards!
Reply:it will be more than 1 log for sure. I'm thinking 5-7 at the most weighing in at 700# each. it will be a drop deck. tow vehicle is a 03 F250 diesel. how will sides save me on weight and cost. forgive my lack of engineering abilityZach WareOwnerMid-GA Outdoor & Equipment ServiceByron GA478-960-2014
