I scored some storm drain grate for my cutting table today for 35 cents lb at the scrap yard. (made a nice clean cut on it thanks to Irishfixit's video showing how to adjust a cutting torch)Those of you who are using this for cutting table tops, do you like the top side up?Or the bottom side up?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:That's the way I was planning to place it, but then I thought if I flip it up side down I could make long straight cuts without the cross pieces getting in the way.I am also thinking of splitting the top lengthwise into two pieces a foot wide each which will allow a 6" gap in the middle of the 30" deep table. I could slide the two pieces together any time I wanted to since they will be just laying inside of a 2" angle frame.Last edited by bigb; 12-27-2011 at 10:04 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Yeah, well I just recounted photos and the last one is the way I would go. I didn't realize there was three photos when I posted. Upside down is the right way to do IMHO. Reason being you will be cutting into the grating itself & you don't want to cut it apart. With the connecting rods on the bottom there is less chance of doing so.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Nice score. We usually refer to that stuff as "bridge deck". I could use a half dozen pieces like that at that price right now. One for a cutting table like you are thinking about, but the rest as a "ramp" over the drainage gutter at the drip line going into the "shop". It's making getting in and out with the forklift a real PITA..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Believe it or not the 8 foot by 30 inch piece I got weighed close to 300 lbs. I had to cut my table top off while it was still in the truck just so I could handle the weight (no help).Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car. |
