So i am in school and we are doing the open butt with 6010 without backing strip in flat position. I have practiced and practiced and i cant get this root pass down consistent. I am running 55-60 amps. i have done the little "c" motion, and the whip n pause motion. I seem to get a little better consistency with the whip n pause but i am not getting 100% penetration through the plate. I am taking it slow on my speed and am not going too fast.  Any pointers? First pic is the "c" motion and the second is the whip n pause.
Reply:What size rod, material thickness, land thickness? Looks like your not jamming your rod in there. In a way you should be welding the backside of the joint if you get what I'm saying. Also how tight is your gap.
Reply:Looking at the pics, I'm guessing that you are using 3/32" 6010 on possibly 1/4" plate.  Doesn't appear to be a parallel gap.  Have to have consistent gap and land.  When learning it's good practice to tack coupons on ends and then drive thin wedge in center to maintain that gap.  Have you spent a day searching all the other 6010 root responses.
Reply:Just being a hobbyist, I don’t have the opportunity to weld much open root. But when I do, I like 3/32“ land, I use a 5/64“ drill bit to set the gap. And I run about 75-amps with 1/8“ 6010.If the gap starts to close up on me, I point the rod in the direction of travel. If the gap starts to open up on me, I point the rod back on already deposited weld. Reply:@ millerweld - currently slated to test D1.1 "limited" SMAW on 3/8" plate in 3G next week.  Miller XMT 304. Lincoln 6010 5p+ and 7018 Excalibur.  Rod oven.Training settings to date:  3/32" gap & land; Root (1/8" 6010 at 70A, Dig "8"); Fill (3/32" 7018 at 77A + 1/8" 7018 at 110A, Dig "1"); Cap (1/8" 7018 at 110A, Dig "1").  4 passes total.  Root settings never have the keyhole run'n OOC out of control.  Barely whip n pause.  Mentally, have half a keyhole that develops and just run her up nice and smooth.  No drama, no rush.  Strive for perfect fitup with parallel sides and solid tacks.Allow plates to cool before applying Cap.  What machine are you using?"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:try vertical up, its easier.   flat is the most difficult position for open root, for me anyway
Reply:Why butt joints and not a bevel groove?Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
Reply:Looks like inconsistent gap, and not enough amps to me.....Gotta have a good fit-up when you are learning - else you chase your tail compensating for the fit-up when you should be adjusting your settings/techniques.....Jody from Welding Tips and Tricks has a couple good videos on 6010 open butt roots - have a watch - maybe the ah-ha moment will happen.
