I know I have seen a setup for using a chop saw cutting a 1" plate for a table. I have searched for a 1/2 hour and still can't find it, anybody know the post? Thanks

Reply:It was an old post, he took a chop saw apart, made a guide and cut a ragged edge off a thick plate for a table top.I looked and looked and I know its here somewhere, I wanted to see the guide setup.
Reply:Why don't you post what it is you want to do, as well as editing your user CP to indicate where you live. Then, you may get some good advise as to what you want to do (if we knew where you lived you may get some volunteer help that is close by). I can tell you that while someone may have done what you are asking about, there are MUCH better methods to cutting plate. It would only take you ten minutes to clean up a torch cut edge. If you modify a standard chopsaw and use it as a skill saw, to cut through a 4' plate 1/2" thick, it will likely take you a month! Don't believe me, just put a 4" piece o 1/2" flat bar in you chop saw and see how long it takes to cut through. The blades are just too thick, and the saws are under powered. The other problem that arises is the friction heats up the steel. Once it it gets red/orange then the saw ceases to cut. What happens is that the hot metal melts the abrasive in the blade, glazing the surface and virtually stopping the cutting action. You would be much better off using a 4.5" or 7" grinder with a zip wheel. It would likely take you one zip wheel per 4" of plate that you had to cut through. Use a torch or plasma and you would be done by now

Reply:" Why don't you post what it is you want to do"I said what I want to do: "  I wanted to see the guide setup. "Don't want or have a chop saw, dirty, messy and hot.I do want to see the guide system though.
Reply:found it:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=25754Thanks
Reply:What I meant was to post up what you are wanting to cut as well. If you don't want to use a chop saw, what are you going to use the guide for? At least you got your location edited, bit far for me though.

Reply:What I wanted to see this old post for was the guide on the saw. I am fiddling around with making a track for a Plasma and torch setup and I wanted to see how the guide was set up.I was working on memory and when I found it and looked it over it isn't what I remembered at all.For 3/4 and bigger stuff right now its get out the torch and cut it, I just want a more accurate setup to do good bevels with.
Reply:Did you dig into DIGRs threads on the SFT thread, or the other inverted angle track torch? You might also look at track torches to see how they operate. They are a relatively simple track system that could be made with cam followers or such. The motors are nice, but not absolutely needed, as once you do away with the friction and unsteady hands, the cuts improve remarkably.
Reply:Check out this very slick and inexpensive setup which would be easy to adapt to any hand or machine torch, OA or plasma:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpCMmCDdFkw&NR=1[/ame]Mod the torch holder and you could bevel with it by holding the torch body parallel to the workpiece.Last edited by farmall; 01-01-2012 at 05:29 PM.
Reply:Yes I have seen this one and its closer to what I want. Definately gave me some ideas. I haven't decided exactly how I am going to do this yet still sourcing pieces parts.
